Ch.4- On the way to Hawaii

Taylor pushed Zac over to the window seat as he sat in a seat straight across from a teenage girl who was probably his age. Hoping she wasn’t a fan, he ran a hand through his hair and sat his other duffel bag under his seat. Taylor fastened his seatbelt and then looked up to see the girl quickly glance at him and then look away again. Her dad was already fast asleep and her mom was looking out the window.

Uh- oh, Taylor thought but that quick little glance didn’t exactly mean she was a fan.

Taylor noticed that she was flipping through a Teen People magazine with Jennifer Lopez on the front. He swallowed remembering that he and his brothers were in that issue, but the girl still hadn’t reacted like a regular fan.

As they took off, the plane got silent and everyone held their breaths till they were safely gliding through the clouds.

Zac turned to Taylor and whispered, "Why isn’t Mandy sitting with you?"

"She said she wanted to sit with Ashley."

Taylor couldn’t look his brother in the eye b/c he knew that Zac was probably going to criticize his and Mandy’s relationship again. Zac just raised an eyebrow in suspicion.

"Oh, I see," he said doubtfully.

"What’s that supposed to mean?" Taylor replied.

"Nothing," Zac shrugged looking out the window.

He didn’t feel like getting lectured again on how he doesn’t know what a relationship is just because he had never been in one. Taylor sighed and feeling defeated, he stared up into space for a second. Looking around he met the teenage girls’ gaze again. He wanted to break away from her stare but for some reason her deep blue eyes commanded him to keep his concentration on her. Suddenly she held up the magazine with the page opened to an article on Hanson sitting near a big picture. She made a quiet simple gesture toward the picture that basically asked if that was them. Taylor nodded in return. The girl switched back and forth from Taylor to the picture giving a pleasing smile.

"You look better in person," she finally spoke.

Taylor blushed. She continued.

"Hanson, eh?"

"So, you’ve heard of us." Taylor said slyly.

"Yeah sure," she shrugged.

Taylor was relieved that she didn’t show any signs of being a teenybopper.

"Cool. What’s your name?" Taylor asked her.

The girl was still flipping through the magazine past the Hanson part.

"Molly." she glanced up casually. "Hmmm. Lemme guess. Taylor and Zac right?"

"Yup," Zac chimed in.

Taylor nodded as Molly looked back at the Teen People again. She seemed like a very conservative person that totally made Taylor attracted to her.

Bob slumped back down in his chair and then leaned over to Scott.

"Lemme tell ya, she’s a babe."

"Why don’t you go talk to her then?!" Scott replied quietly.

"Nah, she’s your type. You go."

Scott rolled his eyes and then peeked over the seats to get a glimpse of her. She was cute but she seemed kind of shy too.

"I don’t think so, Bob. I can’t."

Clint’s voice could be heard in the background. "Yeah, Gipson’s a good brand."

Bob and Scott turned their attention to Clint and Isaac Hanson.

"Yeah, I like ‘em a lot. You play bass right?" Isaac asked Clint.

Clint smiled proudly.

"Yup," he turned to his brother. "Dude, you guys Isaac and his brothers are going to tour this summer! Isn’t that awesome?!"

"Great," Scott sighed.

"Have fun," Bob added equally as unenthusiastic.

Clint nudged them and then smiled at Isaac. "Motion sickness. I’m sure you know how it is."

"Yeah, that happens," Isaac smiled not noticing their annoyance. "Hey though I like your music. Maybe we could all jam sometime."

"Oh, that would be great!" Clint replied excitedly.

Bob and Scott continued their conversation about the girl.

"Ok, go act like you’re walking to the bathroom and smile or wave at her on your way there." Bob whispered.

"That is so lame, Bob."

"Only because you know you can’t do it!" Bob challenged him.

"Fine I will then! I hate you," Scott replied standing up.

"You won’t when you have her phone number in your sweaty palms," Bob added giving Scott a grin.

Isaac and Clint stopped talking and looked up at Scott as he scooted out of the row. Scott walked into the aisle and looked at the girl waiting for her to look back up at him. He began to walk slowly as she looked up. He smiled, giving her sort of a wave with it. She smiled politely in return. Scott then continued walking, deciding not to talk to her.

"Who are you waving at?" Taylor asked Molly as a boy his age with auburn hair walked by.

"Him," she replied as he came into Taylor’s view.

"Oh," Taylor said feeling kinda envious for some reason.

What the hell is wrong with me?! I have Mandy! Taylor told himself.

Scott walked into the bathroom as the plane started to shake a little. He grabbed onto the small sink ledge and grimaced.

"What was that all about?" he asked out loud.

As if someone heard him, the pilot came on the intercom.

"We’re experiencing a little turbulence due to some unexpected cloud coverage. So we’d advise you to buckle your seat belts and stay in your seats unless in the case of an emergency. We assure you though that this is nothing to worry about."

"Hmmm, ok," Scott shrugged as he checked himself out in the mirror. He turned around and looked out the window to see the deep blue ocean under and around them. The sun glistened on the waves.

Scott walked out of the bathroom and smiled at the girl again but this time he saw Taylor Hanson, sitting across from her, and he frowned. Scott sat back down and then turned to Bob.

"Well, how did it go?" Bob asked first.

"Successful until all of my confidence was shattered by the teen heart-throb himself!" Scott replied.

"Grrr," Bob said quietly. "That bites."

Just then, out of nowhere, another large quake of turbulence caused the whole plane to shake violently. Walker and Diana Hanson held onto their little kids fearfully while Ashley clung to Isaac. The turbulence was gone as soon as it had come, causing a great panic among the passengers. As if that weren’t enough the loud hum of the airplane's engines suddenly stopped and the plane itself began to slowly decelerate. Everywhere people were screaming and little kids were crying. Both sets of brothers did their best to round their families together knowing that something was terribly wrong here. Zac saw down the plane that in second class parachutes were being distributed and people were jumping out of the plane! In first class however they were given life preservers and parachutes, but time was running out. Zac and Taylor helped their parents get life preservers on their little brother and sisters before putting it on themselves. Mandy had this shear look of panic and dread on her face. This was the first time Taylor had ever heard her so quiet before. She just stood there in shock. Ashley and Isaac grabbed Jessica and Avery Hanson, the two little sisters. Taylor saw that the flight attendants were leading people to the exits and throwing these yellow inflatable rafts out with them. He watched as the family of three, one by one, jumped off of the plane. Next, before he knew it his parents with the youngest kids, Ashley with Jessica, Isaac with Avery, Zac, and Mandy all jumped. Taylor looked back and saw other looks of panic and then jumped himself. Couple by couple, the Moffatt family safely exited the plane with only second’s left to spare. Diana and Walker struggled to hold Zoe, their baby girl, above the water and at the same time try to keep the whole family together. The water had suddenly become a sea of screaming passengers.
