Ch. 5- Life Preservers and Yellow Rafts
Scott was the first to find a yellow plastic raft within his reach floating nearby. He swam to it and held onto the side. He spun around hanging off the raft with one hand, and looked around.
"Help me, please," said a small voice on his left.
Scott saw that it was the girl on the plane wearily swimming towards him without a life preserver.
Molly wrapped her arms around Scott as he swam to her. She shivered within his grasp.
"Here," Scott lifted Molly onto the raft and then got in himself. "What’s your name?"
"Molly. You?"
"Scott, nice to meet you, but do you see anyone else out there?"
They searched the debris filled water until they saw two blonde haired boys one of them holding the other’s unconscious body. He had tears in his eyes, but Molly recognized him right away.
"Help!" Zac cried out.
Molly and Scott paddled through the water with their hands until they reached two of the Hanson brothers.
"Oh my gosh!" Molly exclaimed when she saw the lifeless Taylor in Zac’s arms. "Get him up first."
Scott and Molly lifted Taylor’s body into the raft and then helped Zac.
"He hit the water pretty hard," Zac said in between sobs.
Molly immediately took charge. She put her ear up to his nose and mouth listening for any sign of air movement. Then she checked his pulse.
"Watch out you guys," she told Zac and Scott as she bent over Taylor.
Molly put her mouth to his and performed CPR within seconds.
"C’mon Taylor breathe damnit!" she exclaimed.
Scott watched how intently she worked on trying to save him and for some reason he felt envious. He knew that this wasn’t the time for those kinds of feelings but he couldn’t help it.
Suddenly Taylor’s eyes opened, he sat up, and then spit up a bunch of water. The salty ocean water splurged out of his mouth as Molly stroked his back comfortingly.
"You did it Molly!" Zac exclaimed happily.
Molly scooted away and looked out over the water as Taylor sat up. Scott just sat back and watched the whole scene.
Everywhere the shrill screams of unseen passengers began to die away and it suddenly got deathly quiet.
