Chapter 17
I finally found a clock in this damn place. There was one hanging over the bar. I couldn’t believe it. They were going to sell alcoholic beverages to minors. That’s just wrong, but I couldn’t complain for fear of getting eaten alive by these monsters. Tonight I would escape though. Somehow, I still hadn’t begun to even form a plan, but I will escape. I had to. No longer could I stay in this place knowing why they were running this club and what purpose it was served for. Then I didn’t want to stay to find out what was going to happen to me either.
About a half an hour before the club was due to open I was dressed in a silver short sleeved shirt and tight black pants. Man where did these people shop? Oh well I guess it was better than nothing. I walked out of the velvet room to see Isabella and Maxum waiting for me. Isabella crossed her arms, and gave me a sly grin. She herself was pretty dressed up. I guess they were sort of like uniforms because she also had on a silver tube top over a long black skirt that had slits open on both sides. Her red waves were up on top of her head occasionally spiraling down here and there. She looked pretty in a way, but once you got past her looks you’d learn that she was very much evil and manipulative. I saw that the guys that were helping put together the club were dressed about the same as I and were standing here and there. Maxum was in his usual black suit as he smiled upon me. Putting a hand on my shoulder he led me over to a table sat up with the sound system equipment.
"There you are," he told me. "Here is the line up. You might want to start putting it together now."
I nodded and picked up the piece of paper that told the album and track line up. He patted my back and walked away back to Isabella. They stood a little bit in front of the table talking to each other. Three other guys, the corpses that I had seen in Maxum’s closet, walked up towards them. I could barely hear them talking but I could make it out.
I pretended to be getting out CD’s while actually eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Alright you know the plan. Wait a while then when that song comes on then you attack." He went over what they were going to do.
I looked down at the sound system in front of me. The more I thought about it I was responsible for everyone who would be killed that night. I couldn’t do this. A weak feeling in my stomach made me want to vomit, but I really had no choice in this matter. It was either play by their rules or get hurt. I choose choice C though which was act like I’m following the rules and then escape when no one was looking. I know that was lame but I’d try to come up with something between the four hours I was due to work behind the CD player.
I went back to their conversation.
"I want to congratulate you my boys. You were well worth the effort of killing and converting you to our . . . family," Maxum smiled at them.
The three boys looked up proud of their accomplishments and that’s when I noticed that they too were now vampires. Poor guys. I felt sorry for them. They looked a little older than my age, but they were still deprived of their natural lives. I did not want to turn out like that. I didn’t want to be 15 forever.
The group broke up and went their separate ways. Pretty soon it was time to open the doors of the club.
I turned on the many strobe lights they had everywhere. The disco ball shined bright overhead. I looked at the list again. Garbage, Madonna, Orgy, Beck, the Chemical Brothers, Prodigy. I had heard of them but some of these people I had never in my entire musical career even heard about. There were names like Nerf Herder, Velvet Chain, Hepburn, Drain STH, and Kittie. I guess I would find out. I started the first song, ‘Blue Monday’ (the Orgy version) as they started to let teenagers in. Swarms of kids came in by the groups. It was packed instantly. Geez and only one day notice. Well, it was a Friday, but still. I hadn’t expected this kind of a turnout. This could get ugly. I hoped that this would be too many people for the vampires to handle but the truth still seemed to kick me in the stomach. I knew that it was the more the better. We weren’t dealing with humans here. We were dealing with the supernatural and I was tired of it already. As much attention as I was getting from Isabella, I didn’t want attention like that. I just wanted someone to truly love me for who I was.
About fifteen minutes later, I played a remix version of Madonna’s ‘Frozen’. I liked that song actually. It was very well written. My mind wondered off to the music and the people dancing.
Just then the door opened and in walked a girl. She was about my age with brown hair and blue eyes. My heart stopped and I swallowed hard. I felt like I was trembling inside with anxiety. My forehead already had droplets of sweat trickling down onto my face. It was a little hot in here, but I could not take my eyes off of her. She seemed to move through the crowd, almost fly amongst the people. Her outfit perfectly shaped her frame and her expressions were quick, petite, and very precise. It was like she was looking for someone. I saw her checking out everyone on the dance floor and at the bar suspiciously. It seemed as if everyone around her was just a blur of light that reflected from her body. She appeared to be almost like an angel or a higher being in search of a missing object or person. Everything about her was beautiful. I had never felt this way in my entire life about someone else before especially not just by the sight of them. I never did believe in love at first sight, but at that instant I knew that this is what it must feel like. Time felt like it stood still, everyone else didn’t matter, but her, and all I wanted to do is to be around her. To touch her. To talk to her. Just the thought of me trying to speak to her was making me nervous. I couldn’t do that so I found myself staring at her wishing that her gaze would meet mine. As if on command from my wishful thinking she turned her head and our eyes met. Her crystalline blue tore through my brown with an immense stare that shook my body and filled me with a happiness that I couldn’t explain. I felt, as there was an attraction between us, an invisible stare that only we could see and feel. I wondered if she felt it to. Blushing I pulled away so I wouldn’t look so obvious. I glanced back at her from the corner of my eye and she too must have felt something because she was blushing too and she started to walk between people.
Immediately after my hypnotic staring session I remembered what Maxum had planned to do and all I could think about was how to tell her that she was in danger. I had to get to her somehow and warn her of what was going to happen. I looked over at Isabella who was busy serving people drinks. The people who had been at the bar this whole time were already drunk and I knew that they’d probably be the first to go.
At the change of the next song, I stepped down from my spot as DJ and walked through the crowd in search of the girl. I had to warn her.
I spotted her on the balcony overlooking the whole place and practically sprinted up the steps. I pushed past a couple of people until I reached her. From where I was standing I could see that she had on leopard print pants and a black leather coat on over a black tank top. Nervously I swallowed and walked up behind her. My shaking hand laid itself upon her shoulder only to have her spin around very surprised. Her eyes were wide and she seemed a little startled. My heart was beating and I backed up a little giving her a smile.
"Hi, um," I stuttered.
I had not idea what to say. She grinned and extended her hand for me to shake.
Taking her hand in mine I felt a bolt of electricity that shook me as it surged through my entire body. I know she felt it to because she had the same look on her face as I did. Our hands immediately broke free and we were speechless for a couple of seconds making us both blush once we snapped out of it.
"Oh, uh I’m Janie," she finally spoke to me shyly.
"Cool, I’m Bob," I replied.
Shyness and nervousness were good in my book.
"Nice meeting you. I saw you over there. Are you the DJ?" she asked me.
I noticed her flinch at herself for asking me such an obvious question, but I didn’t mind.
"Yeah I uh," I told her but then remembered what I came up there to say. "I mean I wanted to tell you that . . ."
She looked at me intently for a couple of seconds but then as if she were breaking out of some hypnotism she looked back down at the crowd anxiously.
"Bob, I really shouldn’t talk right now. I have to-" she stopped for a second appearing to lose her train of thought.
I suddenly wondered if she had a boyfriend.
Janie walked past me and looked over there muttering a quiet, "shit." She was looking at a guy maybe a little bit older than us, who had just walked in the door. That wasn’t a good sign I guess.
Just then another song came on and I saw Isabella transform and jump over the counter to attack one of her customers. The three new boys came from another room also transformed but slowly walked towards the crowd not as eager to attack as Isabella. The same went with the other vampires. Uh- oh this wasn’t good. I grabbed Janie’s arm and spun her around before she was about to run down the steps.
"Janie, listen, I meant to tell you that you and everyone in here are in serious danger," I exclaimed. "Please get away from here or they’ll kill you! I don’t want you to get hurt."
Janie gave me a sympathetic look as she broke free from my grasp.
"No, Bob, you get out of here. I can handle myself ok?" she said to me. "For your own sake just go."
I stared at her confused and curious. Just then, as she jumped off the balcony, I realized who she was. She must have been the slayer. The three boys had surrounded the guy that had walked into the club. I watched as Janie single handedly attacked and fought off all three of them at once. I strained to hear what she was saying to the guy.
"Isaac get out of here! I told you not to come here!"
"I can’t leave without you!" he replied.
That wasn’t a good sign. He was probably her boyfriend.
She had killed the newly made vampires instantly. Janie ran over to the door and opened it as she tried to fight a couple more vampires off, but they just kept coming out from their hiding places. Everywhere teenagers were screaming, running, and dying. Most of them had run out the door though. Janie stood in the middle of the dance floor, but then ran over to Isaac once most of the people had escaped. Isabella was in the corner too busy feasting off of someone to notice, but the rest of the vampires started to come after her and the one called Isaac. She ran with him right behind her up the stairs towards me, with a group of vampires on their tails. Suddenly one vampire stood at the top of the stairs blocking them. I looked for something to hit him with and then I remember what Isabella had told me about vampires. After breaking a wooden chair in half, I took the shredded leg and stuck it in the vampire guys back causing him to disintegrate into dust. When the dust cleared, Janie and Isaac were standing there giving me a bewildered look. We were way outnumbered now. So I motioned for them to come to me.
"Follow me you guys."
Janie and Isaac ran with me to a backfire exit and out towards the parking light. The moon provided just enough light for us to see where we were going. Without even stopping Isaac jumped into his car and drove off. Janie got into hers and motioned for me to get into the passenger side.
As we were on the road we didn’t say much.
"How did you know what was going to happen?" I decided to ask her.
"I was going to ask you the same question," she eyed me suspiciously.
"Well," I suddenly realized that she could think that I was one of them. "I was kind of kidnapped and forced to work there."
She gave me a look.
"Alright."
"As stupid as that sounds, it’s very much true," I looked down wanting to forget about it all. "And I know what you’re thinking, but I’m not a vampire."
Suddenly she grabbed my wrist and held it up while she drove with one hand.
"Then please explain this." She said dropping my hand as if it were filled with bacteria.
"It’s kind of a long story, but," I started and then told her about Isabella.
I didn’t tell her all of the details, but just about what she did.
"I see," Janie’s eyes glared into little slits and her mouth turned upside down into a frown. "I know about her. I thought I had killed her a couple of months ago, but obviously not. That bitch."
I was surprised by her tone of voice. It was mean for someone so petite and innocent looking.
"So then you’re the slayer."
She nodded silently and that answered my question.
We sat there quietly for a while. I thought about how I felt when I first saw her. I didn’t want it to go away. Afraid that I might lose it, I looked at her again and it came right back. I sighed. Who would’ve though? Me, Bob Moffatt, in love with the slayer. It was kind of ironic.
"We have to stop at my house first. I need to talk to Isaac. I’m sure he’s wondering what’s going on." Janie sighed.
"Why he doesn’t know that you’re the slayer?"
"Precisely, and I didn’t want him to." She replied as we parked in her driveway beside Isaac.
He had stopped his car and was now getting out. He had a really angry look on his face.
"I have to make sure he doesn’t tell anyone else now." Janie added as she too got out of her car.
I stepped out of the passenger side and walked around, standing beside her. Isaac evil eyed me and then turned back to Janie. Woah that was a little harsh for someone he didn’t even know. I got a good look at him finally and I noticed that he seemed to look extremely familiar.
"Ok, can you please explain to me what the fuck that was back there?" Isaac blew up.
"Calm down MMMbop boy," Janie told him holding her hands up in defense.
Oh, I know who he is! He’s a Hanson! I forgot that they were from Oklahoma. Man this was about the most ironic day I have ever had.
"Don’t you ever call me that again!" he pointed a finger at us. "And who is this?"
"Bob, Isaac, Isaac, Bob." Janie explained.
"Yeah whatever," Isaac glared at me and then turned back to Janie again. "Ok I’m still waiting."
"Well, what can I say? They’re vampires and I uh," she looked down. "I kill them."
"What like a slayer?" Isaac laughed.
"Yup you got it, and I don’t want anyone else to know about this!" Janie stood before him now glaring him down.
She was very serious about that.
"I so do not believe you."
"It’s true," I spoke up. "She is, and those were real vampires. If you would’ve stayed there you’d be one now too."
Janie gave me a quick smile.
"Were we talking to you?" Isaac yelled at me. "How do we know you’re not one?"
"Because . . ."
"Because he’s my boyfriend," Janie announced to Isaac making him speechless.
It even made me speechless. I glanced at her giving her a puzzled look. I cannot believe she just said that.
