Chapter 9

I got ready to head out the door just as Taylor came inside. I gave him a smirk and turned to him with a grin.

"Where have you been all day?" I pressed him crossing my arms as I waited for his answer.

"None of your business, dumb ass," he replied sharply.

"Oh, that hurt!" I turned towards the door. "See ya later little man."

"Somehow I doubt that," he grinned realizing full well that I liked Janie now.

"Huh? What do you mean?" I stopped before leaving, my heart thudded out of my chest with nervous anticipation for what he was going to say next.

"I’m going back over to Janie’s," he told me with a smirk that could kill.

My jaw dropped. Not only had he been at her house all day but he was going back tonight! This was totally unfair! I couldn't reply I just stood there wordless and motionless, as he seemed to have skipped happily away back to his room. I could see the anxiousness in his face and the dreamy thoughts through his eyes. Oh yeah he wanted her bad I could tell! The only thing about that was that he could probably have her too, which meant that I had absolutely no chance. What the hell did I even bother for anyway you know? This is so lame. I’m just gonna learn to have to forget about her I guess.

Recapturing my emotions, I went out to my car and started it up, slowly backing out the driveway. On my way to "our little hangout" I blared some Aerosmith through the stereo speakers. Within minutes I had arrived at the spot. Actually it was about three spots. There were three parking places in the middle of a Blockbuster movie place and a Sonics drive in. We sort of occupied them with our cars every Friday and sometimes Saturday night. We’d usually just sit there on our cars checking out the girls who hung out at Sonics or something stupid like that. Occasionally I did meet a few, most of which always happened to be fans, but I suppose that’s alright.

I parked my car beside Jacks and got out revealing to the world my baggy khakis and green button up over shirt. The guys immediately came up to me, swarming me with smiles and hugs. I hadn’t seen them in so long. I chuckled at David’s new haircut. He used to have long blonde hair like ours but it was cut now, but in a very weird way!

"David, man, what did you do to your hair?"

Jack smacked the back of David’s head that was in colorful dreadlocks.

"Yeah we told him not to but he didn’t anyway!" Keith added laughing with a bottle of beer in his hand.

"Hey you guys it looks awesome shut up!" David complained.

David was the shyest and youngest of all of us. I was 19, which wasn’t too much older than he was, but both Jack and Keith were 21. I still had no idea why they didn’t go away off to college. I’d have to ask them about that later on I guess. But back to David. He was shorter and actually reminded me a lot of Taylor except for the fact that his voice was ten times deeper than Tay’s. Plus, David was a total "skater". He had the punk patches all over his backpack, the silver ball chain and hemp necklaces, and a whole "skater" wardrobe. To tell you the truth I admired the guy. As much as we picked on him for just being a senior in high school, and never drinking and stuff like that he still put up with us. I usually didn’t make fun of him, but I found it odd that hanging out with Jack and Keith who drank constantly, and him always doing pot that he didn’t drink too. I guess everyone has dislikes.

"Ah, don’t worry ‘bout it David, it’s cool," I told him punching him in the shoulder.

He got a goofy grin on his face and stumbled back a little.

"I don’t care." He replied.

He was stoned already and we hadn’t even begun the night! I looked at him with a worried expression as he leaned up against my car. His eyes hung open a little bit and dark circles had formed around his eyes. Poor guy. Jack noticed my sincerity towards him and smiled.

"Oh, don’t worry about him, Ike, he’ll be ok. He knows how to take care of himself," Jack said as we all went and sat down on the hood of my car that was closer to the Blockbuster.

"So how come you guys never went to college? I thought you were going to go away last year, Keith." I asked curiously.

He looked down a little bit sadly.

"I never got excepted. I think I’ll have to continue to go to that technical community college!" he replied kicking a rock that was on the pavement.

"It’s not so bad, man," Jack patted him on the back getting a little drunk now. "I’ve been there for about two years almost and it’s getting easier."

"Yeah because you’re taking the same classes over again that you took last year!" Keith retorted.

David and I laughed.

"Hey!" Jack yelled but then his frown turned into a smile and he began to laugh too.

Or laughter seized to end especially when David decided to get adventurous. See, this was always funny because he was so high that he normally wouldn’t do this if he weren’t and we just sat there watching him say cheesy pick up lines to any girl that walked into Blockbuster. By now even Jack was drunk. So I had one friend wasted and the other one was stoned. I turned to look at Keith who was drinking but didn’t appear to be too drunk yet. In fact I think that was his first beer that night. Hmmm, that’s a change. Anyway, David walked up to a preppy, tall blonde chick with really big boobs and a short ass mini skirt. He blocked her way into the movie place with a full of shit high as hell grin on his face. I busted out laughing.

"Hey, babe, what’s up?" he asked her.

"Ugh!" she tried to get past him but he offered her a smoke before she went in.

"As if!" She pushed him away and walked inside.

Keith and I busted up laughing. God, as much trouble as we could be in this was still as funny as hell! Besides, David would probably be the only one who got into trouble anyway because we were far enough away from the place that no one could see us as much. I realized that in an odd sort of way I missed these immature guys. I tried to catch my breath, which escaped me from laughing so hard. My stomach cramped up and I tried to regain my normal composure.

David started laughing too and then collapsed on the sidewalk by the door waiting for more girls to walk by. Just then a nice forest green Jeep Grande Cherokee pulled up, and we stood there waiting to see if it was David’s next victim. He stood up immediately and blocked our view of what was going on. I looked away for a second making sure there were no cops around and then looked back to see David being hurled to the ground!

"Shit!" the three of us heard him yell and came running up to see who did it.

He lay there on his back, dazed, and in pain. I looked up to see who did this and I met Janie’s gaze. Janie, what was she doing here?! What the hell? I had so many questions but I was speechless. She did this to him?! Man, I’ll never make her mad!

"What the hell are you doing?!" Jack exclaimed at her.

She just rolled her eyes and looked at me with an expression on her face that made me feel ashamed for hanging out with these dorky friends of mine.

"Isaac, I seriously can’t believe you," she shook her head ignoring Jack.

Janie spun around and went into Blockbuster leaving me there to help pick up the bewildered David. Man to think that Janie basically picked him up, flipped him over and onto the ground! How the hell could she do that? Even though he was a small guy and a year younger than I was, she was still two years younger than he was and a lot shorter too. Damn, I was perplexed at the situation.

"C’mon guys let’s get out of here," I heard Jack saying but I couldn’t move from that spot.

I had realized that I lost the only chance with her that I ever had by hanging out with the wrong crowd. It’s stupid to say that I would pick my friends over my girlfriend but when comparing Janie to those guys, well, she just seemed a lot more tolerable. Suddenly I heard my name being yelled.

"Isaac!" Keith was saying. "You coming?"

"No, you guys, I gotta get home," I lied pretending to look at a watch that I really didn’t have.

"Oh all right!" he replied.

Jack added, "We’ll be at the graveyard if you need us!"

Then they were gone.

I thought about waiting for Janie to come out of there so I could talk to her, but what good would it really do? So I just went home figuring that everything could still maybe turn out for the better but knowing that in my heart things just wouldn’t work out for me.
