                        The Imortance of Dario Today

Getting to know Father Dario is to approach  a more intimate relation with the person of Jesus and of  Jesus crucified. This young Veracruz martyr was " crucified with Christ " (Gal 2, 19) and now bears forever as we can confidently proclaim, he " bears in his body the sign of Jesus branded in his body" (Gál 6, 17), moreso, " the death of Jesus " (2 Co 4, 10) " so that  the life of Jesus is manifest in his person " (2 Co 4, 10).

In this sense, Darío is also messenger of the resurrection of the Lord of glory who " will transform our miserable body, in conformance with His glorious body, by the power which subjects all things to Himself. "  (Fil 3, 21).  By  faith, we know very well that the Resurrected One is " he who lives forever and ever and that holds in His hand the keys of the death " (AP 1, 18).  " Once raised from the dead, death has no hold on him;  now, his life is  to live for God " (ROM 6, 9-10).  Also for those who believed in Him, " Through Jesus, God will bring next to Himself those who have died " (1 Tes 4, 14).

Therefore, we must approach the life of this young martyr, gunned down in his 23rd year, with due reverance. Since all human life is a mystery, how much more the life of  a saint,  and most of all that of such a young martyr.  This profound mystery is even more difficult to penetrate for the myopic eye of worldly man.  Before any consideration, one must seek with an eager eye to contemplate the soul of this young martyr, must clear the darknesses of  natural wisdom to reach the wisdom of God  "for the Jews, what greater scandal!  And for the Greeks, what madness!  (1 Co 1, 23).

The modern world  falsely considers and encourages the "happiness" of youth in the fleeting drunkenness of pleasures and proclaims the richness of success to lie in a brilliant career, money, peer respect, honors and plenty of sex !  A faithful life seems something impossible
for the world
;  and a  life dedicated to Christ is a complete waste, worthless.

In sign of contradiction, Dario's blood cries out to remind us, in a loud voice, of the true values of life, "repeating mysteries in the light of day, shouting secrets from the rooftops ". (Mt 10, 27).  By his dedicated life of sacrifice, he speaks to us, especially to youth, that there is something more,to life, for "the facination of wickedness obscures what is good, and roving desire perverts the innocent mind" (Sab, 4, 12).  In order to analyze his soul, with a respectful attitude, we must unite a brotherly attitude, that of  Old Testament and the older child (Judah) who inclines with affection and admiration  (Gen 43-45)younger child(Benjamin) selected in a unique manner by the Holy Spirit and converted heroically by perfect correpondence to His grace.

Dario is an example of this truth spoken Saint Ignatius of Loyola who says:  "Noone can lead us to such a level of sanctity level, easily and in just a short time,  but the grace of the Spirit Santo can carry us if we place no obstacles.  In fact, the soul and  life of Dario are completely  given up to the action of the Holy Spirit.  We can say of him what the holy book  Wisdom proclaims:  " Consumavit  in brevi, explevit tempora fine. "  "  Being perfected in a short time the just finish the race in a short time"  (Sab, 4, 13) and also "For old age is not honored for length of time, not measured in number of years, but understanding is grey hair for anyone, and a blameless life is a ripe old age.  (Wis., 4, 9).

Because  Darío was faithful in small things, he had the vigor to confront the greatest challenge with the gift of strength endowed by the Holy Spirit. We speak not only of his strong character,  but the grace of God that sustained him in his supreme sacrifice.

While we see so many youth easily leaving the right path to look for cracked wells that  do not retain  water (Jer 2, 13), Darío, from his     pulpit of glory and with strength of soul, fearlessly indicates the rough road to overcome the easy selfish life which profits nothing. Surely  Dario did not know Jaime Brel who had not begun his singing career during this era. Yet surely many of you know him by this song:

If all that were true, Mary, Joseph, the manger,
The Child, the shepherds, the angels in the sky,
If all that were true, all that is so beautiful, that
Oh!  Yes, I could believe, if all that were true!

For Darío, all that was truth and all that gave a sense to his life.   A single youth in his era was sufficient to set afire the love of many as proven by the hords who flocked to his tomb to pray.  A single spark is sufficient to burn a forest!

Darío had understood the call of Jesus and had followed it.  In this call, the ultimate meaning of life was understood.  It is easy to give up and to escape  looking for solutions lead nowhere.  Our  modern society is in crisis because we lack  strong youth like Darío.  He teaches  us that Jesus is the center of  life and gives a meaning to everything up to the last moment of  life.  His love of Jesus gave him an intimacy with Christ who had released him of all slavery and Jesus name was on his lips when the time came to appear before Him. He had lived in the truth that makesus free as John tells us  " The Truth shall set you free " (Jn 8.32).  This freedom is a gift and at the same a responsibility to discover it is  fundamental for any Christian. It is not sufficient only to discover Christ but it is necessary to give Him to others.  Darío tried to give Christ by teaching catechism, which he did up to the last moment in spite of the danger he faced.  He faced his task, with courage like Saint Paul. " If I proclaim the gospel, I do so by obligation, and this is no reason for boasting.  Woe to me, should I not preach the gospel "  (1 Co 9, 15).  Finally, he did so by shedding his blood.  He leaves us a heart witness, a witness of stronger love.

Darío will never die or cease to be young. He will always remain as witness for the youth of the Church and particularly of Veracruz and Mexican youth.  He will never be a man of the past or a man of yesterday.  On the contrary, he will be for always man of tomorrow, a man of  the evangelic future of the Church, a witness of  future, a man of the yet to come.

During the beatification of  Father Damien, apostle of the lepers, Cardinal Godfriel Danneels said:

The hero is born as he battles within, with his own courage, his own zeal.  We are drawn to admire a hero, yet the glance leads us no further. A Saint, on the contrary is a miracle of  grace.  When we admire a Saint, we are drawn to contact with a different person and when we call upon that person, he responds to us:  " God "!  (Osservatore Romano, no. 23, 6th of June 1995).

So  Father Dario pushes us to seek further.  And if we call him, he repeats to us, with the zeal of his celestial youth, his last word when he fell pestered by the bullets of  his murderers. "JESUS".
