De devil came a searchin',
'Long wif his evil ban'.
Lookin' for new souls ta steal,
Travelin' crost de lan'.

He come 'pon some chillin,
A playin' in de stree'.
He say he come ta show 'em,
How much fun it is ta cheat.

He say he gonna teach 'em,
Everthin' he knowed.
How aftawads he take 'em,
Where hit doan neva git co'd.

De devil he's a doin' fin',
W'en w'at ta his surprise.
A lil girl tug on his sleeve,
Wif tears in bof her eyes.

"Hey, mis'er," she says plit'ly,
"Wha' ya tryin' ta do?"
I jist come frum Sunday School,
An' I hear de truf 'bout you.

Dey tau't us all dere is ta know,
'Bout wha' ya dun ta man.
'Bout all de evil that ya do,
Ta ketch us ef ya can.

Dey tol' us ef we really b'lieve,
An' wan' ta do wha's right,
Den all we hast ta do is ast,
An' our hearts are sealed up tight.

De devil, he los' his evil grin,
An' a sneer cros' over his face.
"Som uns allus interferin'," he say,
"Com on le's leave dis place."

Now chillin, doan ya ever think,
De devil he gon' fer good.
He's in de backgroun' a waitin',
Till ya doan do wha' ya should.

He's a sneak an' he's a villin,
Wun of de wustest kin'.
So w'en ya feel him a comin',
Jist say, "Devil, git de behin'."
