Not many simulation games in 1999. In fact, Catz and Dogz barely got released in 1999 -- in late December. There wouldn't be a Top 3 Simulation games chart for this year's Best of the Year feature without those two games released. But, I'm sure everyone knows which game gets first, without looking to the left.

Perhaps the most innovative new game idea is in the form of Pokémon Snap. But, I'm afraid that the lack of multi-player capabilities gave the number one spot to one of the best "party games": Mario Party, which already has a sequel out.

There's been a lot more arcade-updates in 1999, including N64 versions of Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Asteroids. Even Game Boy Color received a multitude of arcade classics.

What happened to the mainstream of first-person shooters? Doom 64, Hexen, GoldenEye 007, Duke Nukem 64, even South Park. Last year only three shooters were released: Quake II (the second Quake game for the N64), Armorines (a new game by Acclaim), and Turok: Rage Wars (a semi-sequel to 1998's Turok: Seeds of Evil). Hopefully, these three games will hold action fans over until Perfect Dark is released.
