What Does It Mean?

When identifying the genre of a game, a certain genre type is given to it. You may have seen RPG, Puzzle, Action/Adventure, etc. listed as genre types on KNP. In this editorial, I will clear up any confusion you may have about these types of genres.
Action:

This refers to pure action. Games like GoldenEye 007, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, Star Fox 64, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and Blast Corps all fall under this category.


Action/Arcade:

This refers to classic arcade games. Games like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Game & Watch Gallery, and Asteroids all fall under this category.


Action/Adventure:

This refers to Action games that have some characteristics of an Adventure game. Games like Donkey Kong Country (series), Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Wario Land II, and Metroid (series) all fall under this category.


Adventure:

This refers to Action games that have some characteristics of an RPG. Games like The Legend of Zelda (series), Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Castlevania (N64), and Illusion of Gaia all fall under this category.


RPG:

This stands for Role Playing Game. Games like Final Fantasy (series), Chrono Trigger, Dragon Warrior (series), Final Fantasy Legend (series), and EarthBound all fall under this category.


RPG/Adventure:

This refers to games that have the characteristics of an Adventure game and an RPG. There are not many. Games like Super Mario RPG fall under this category.


RPG/Strategy:

This refers to an RPG with a sense of strategy. Games like Ogre Battle (series) and StarCraft fall under this category.


Simulation:

This refers to a game that simulates something real. Games like SimCity (series), Pilotwings 64, Tamagotchi, SimEarth, and SimAnt all fall under this category.


Puzzle:

This refers to a game that plays like a puzzle. It makes you think. Games like Tetris (series), Dr. Mario, Bust-A-Move (series), Tetris Attack, and Wetrix all fall under this category.


Action/Puzzle:

This refers to Action games that have characteristics of a Puzzle game. Games like Lemmings, Lode Runner 3-D, Charlie Blast's Territory, The Adventures of Lolo (series), and Mole Mania all fall under this category.


Fighting:

This refers to Action games where two or more players fight each other, like street fighting. Games like Mortal Kombat (series), Street Fighter (series), Killer Instinct (series), Clay Fighter (series), and Super Smash Bros. all fall under this category.


Edutainment:

This refers to games that help you learn. Games like Mario Is Missing!, Mario's Time Machine, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego? all fall under this category.


Family:

This refers to games based on game shows, board games, or just other fun things (like painting). Games like Mario Party, Mario Paint, Monopoly, Pokémon Snap, and Game Boy Camera all fall under this category.


Basketball:

This refers to games based on basketball. Games like NBA Jam (series), NBA Live (series), Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside, and NBA In The Zone (series) all fall under this category.


Football:

This refers to games based on football. Games like Madden NFL Football (series), NFL Blitz (series), and NFL Quarterback Club (series) all fall under this category.


Baseball:

This refers to games based on baseball. Games like Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball (series), Bottom of the Ninth (series), All-Star Baseball (series), and Virtual League Baseball all fall under this category.


Soccer:

This refers to games based on soccer. Games like International Superstar Soccer (series), FIFA Soccer (series), and Mega Man's Soccer (really) all fall under this category.


Hockey:

This refers to games based on hockey. Games like Blades of Steel (series), Wayne Gretzky's 3-D Hockey (series), and NHL Hockey series all fall under this category.


Golf:

This refers to games based on golf. Games like True Golf Classics (series), Golf (GB), Golf (VB), and Mario Golf all fall under this category.


Bowling:

This refers to games based on bowling. Games like Nester's Funky Bowling, Milo's Astro Lanes, Super Bowling, and Brunswick World Tournament of Champions all fall under this category.


Tennis:

This refers to games based on tennis. Games like Mario's Tennis, All-Star Tennis '99, and Top Rank Tennis all fall under this category.


Boxing:

This refers to games based on boxing. Games like Punch-Out!! (series), Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, and Teleroboxer all fall under this category.


Wrestling:

This refers to games based on wrestling. Games like WWF Wrestling (series), WCW Vs. NWO: World Tour, WCW/NWO Revenge, and WWF: War Zone all fall under this category.


Racing:

This refers to games based on racing. Games like Mario Kart (series), Diddy Kong Racing, F-Zero (series), F-1 World Grand Prix (series), and San Francisco Rush all fall under this category.


There are other sports too: 1080° Snowboarding [Snowboarding], Bassmasters (series) [Fishing], and Slalom [Skiing]. (By the way, Slalom was one of Rare's first games for the NES.)
So there you have it, all of the genre types that ever appear on KNP. Also, some of these genre types are listed in the Top Games section. In that section, RPG's and RPG/Strategy and Adventure games fall under the Top 5 RPG's, Puzzle and Action/Puzzle games fall under the Top 5 Puzzle Games, Action and Action/Arcade and Action/Adventure games fall under the Top 5 Action Games, all Sports games fall under the Top 5 Sports Games, and the rest of the Top 5 lists are self-explanitory.

I hope this editorial clears up a few things.
