UNION FALLS

Getting The Trailhead: From the South entrance of Yellowstone NP go South 1.5 miles to Reclamation Road (the same road that takes you to Flagg Ranch.) Turn right. Follow the road about 10 miles to Grassy Lake. The trailhead is marked with a sign "Mountain Ash Creek Trail".
Quick Facts: Round Trip Distance:15 miles, Vertical Gain: about 1,000 feet, Last Elvis Sighting: May 24, 1997.

Union Falls gets my vote for "best falls in the park". The falls are created by two creeks converging (thus the name "Union")at the drop-off point. At 250 Ft., Union Falls is almost as tall as Lower Falls in The Grand Canyon Of The Yellowstone. The big difference between the two is the fact that you will have Union Falls to yourself....maybe a handful of people will be around. The reason for the solitude? It's a 7.5 mile hike in, 15 miles round trip.

Although this hike is 15 miles roundtrip, there is only about 800 ft. of elevation change. One mile into the hike you will have to ford the Falls River. This is generally a shallow crossing, but of course depends on rainfall amounts and snowmelt. After crossing the river you will gradually climb for a bit before dropping down to Proposition Creek. From here follow the creek to the spur trail which leads to Union Falls.

Route Recap:

Grassy Lake to Falls River Crossing = 1 mile
River Crossing to Proposition Creek = 5 miles
Proposition Creek to Union Falls = About 2 miles
