Travis Carter House

(copyright wording will not appear on the purchased print)

Travis Carter was one of the first merchants to call Seymour his home. He purchased the first lot sold by Meedy Shields in 1852, and built this home there. In 1854 he built a wool carding business at the northeast corner of 6th & Ewing streets. In 1856 he built the first planing mill. He was also instrumental in the founding of the Seymour Woolen Mill, the Hub and Spoke factory, as well as other industries. He also seems to have served as Seymour’s first post master, as one of the rooms of his house was used as the first post office. In 1989, this house was purchased and restored by the Seymour Heritage Foundation, and today houses the American Red Cross. It is located at 410 Indianapolis Avenue.
