Shields School
In 1869, the two-story brick schoolhouse built by Meedy Shields was too small to accommodate the children of a growing Seymour. The Shields’ family donated a wooded piece of property on the west side of Walnut Street, between 5th and 6th Streets for the new school. In 1870, Shields school was built as a six-room, three-story building to house all 12 grades. In 1875, the size of the school was doubled with the addition of 6 new rooms.
