The Faceless Nun

A few miles to the northwest of Terre Haute, Indiana is a Catholic Women’s college by the name of St. Mary-of-the-Woods. In the mid 1940’s, there was a sister who lived there who was well known for her oil painting. Her specialty was portraits. One day she started a self-portrait, but became ill before she could finish the painting, and unfortunately died. The painting was complete, except for the face, which was just a blank flesh tone.

One day not too long after this, one of the sisters was in the church praying when she notice another nun a few rows up from her sobbing. She decided to try to console her, so she went to her and put her hand on her shoulder. When the weeping nun turned her head towards the other nun, she was horrified to see that the nun had no face! She ran from the church screaming and was stopped by others who calmed her down. Some of them went into the church, but could find no signs of the faceless nun.

Soon after this first encounter, other sisters started seeing the faceless nun, not only in the church, but also in other places on the campus. The encounters became so frequent that there were meetings organized by priests and others on the campus as to what could be done about the situation. Some suggestions were made for exorcisms, but one meek nun had an idea.

This other sister was artistic as well. She sat down with the unfinished portrait of the dead sister and, working from a photograph, filled in the face and finished the portrait. Since that day, the faceless nun was never seen on the campus again.
