SB220LT

Since its founding in 1983, Trans Island Bus Service (TIBS; now known as SMRTBus) had been using Japanese buses from either Hino or Nissan Diesel. In 1990, TIBS introduced its first European bus model, the DAF SB220LT. The chassis were made in the Netherlands and they were then shipped to Zaragoza, Spain to be built with a bodywork by Hispano Carocera. The buses arrive in Singapore as Completely Built Up units. They were the first to be fitted with an Electronic Destination Sign (EDS) which indicate the service number and destinations.

The Hispano bodied SB220LT were first deployed on TIBS's new semi-express routes; 950, 951 and 952 which connected Woodlands New Town with Shenton Way, Boon Lay and Marina Centre respectively. In 1996, TIBS bought another 50 chassis which had a Walter Alexander Setanta bodywork built in Falkirk, UK. The Hispano DAFs were transferred to Singapore Shuttle Bus (a subsidiary of TIBS) as a replacement for the old buses which were withdrawn in 1998-99. Since then, they bear CSS registration and deployed on City Shuttle Service routes.

CSS 274R (former TIB 409M) is one of the 34 Hispano DAF SB220LT bought by TIBS in 1990. It is now with Singapore Shuttle Bus (SSB) and is pictured here at SSB's Geylang Depot. All the DAFs of SSB have a full body ad.

The remaining 5; TIB 400L, 401J, 402G, 403D and 404B were withdrawn. One is known to have been sold to the UK. It was acquired by MacEwans Coach Services of Scotland and registered as G195 CLF.

CSS285J (former TIB 420D) at Geylang Depot with its EDS showing the service number and terminating points. The front EDS was actually meant as a side display. Hence, it is smaller and the words don't change.
