OLYMPIAN ONTL11/2R

In 1981, Leyland sent Singapore Bus Service (SBS) a demonstrator for evaluation purposes. The bus was fitted with the new R type body from Walter Alexander. SBS was very pleased and placed an order for 200 similar buses. For conformity of parts, SBS chose the Leyland TL11 engine and they became the last Leyland engined buses to be produced.

The demonstrator was returned to England while the new buses were registered and deployed between 1986 - 1988. With the addition of the Olympians, SBS now had a fleet of over 900 double-decker buses. The Olympians were deployed islandwide in the beginning but towards its retrenchment years, most were based at Jurong Depot and deployed on the Jurong Industrial Services. The Olympians were fully withdrawn in December 2003.

Chassis no. B45.07, one of the prototype Olympian, showcasing Walter Alexander's new R type bodywork at the 1980 Commercial Motor Show. This bus was meant as a demonstrator for SBS and was painted in the company livery.

The Leyland Olympian demonstrator was registered as SBS 5396B in May 1981. It spent a few years in Singapore for evaluation and led to the purchase of 200 similar buses. The bus returned to England and was acquired by the City of Oxford Motor Services. In 1997, it was acquired for preservation at the Oxford Bus Museum in Long Hanborough.

SBS ordered 200 Olympians which were registered between 1986 - 1988. They all had an Alexander R-type bodywork and look similar to the 1984 vintage Atlanteans. However, the Olympian was easily recognized by the front radiator grille. SBS 7137U is seen here parked at Boon Lay Interchange.

As the ONTL11/2R Olympians neared retirement, spare parts were getting scarce and in some cases there weren't any at all. 3567M here had its windscreens replaced, minus the small louvre windows.
