* Informer/ April 05 * Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Yes we are happy to be back in the USA but at the same time we are troubled about leaving our co-workers behind during some very trying times in Zimbabwe. We are not troubled about whether they have the ability to handle the ministry. In fact we are quite confident that they will handle things very well. But we are troubled that people we love and care about are suffering some very trying times. During these times ministry continues to move forward. There are many things the devil uses to detour ministry from its intended goal and some deterrents are the shortage of food and the economic means to buy it. At this moment in Zimbabwe we are facing the worst drought in 20 years. Add to that the loss of 4500 commercial farmers and their farms, and being left with only small scale farmers who cannot feed themselves. This leaves us with about 4 million of the 12 million total population at risk of starvation this year!!! This is why we started the "Food Assistance" for our employees and their families. We cannot alleviate hunger, but we can detour starvation at least for those with a connection to us as a ministry team. We cannot grow, move or store "maize" (corn). So we cannot provide the staple even if it were in the country. We can however buy rice as a substitute at this time. If rice can no longer be purchased within Zimbabwe then we will be forced to look outside the country. Our experiences in the past have been that the food will be within Zimbabwe to buy but the prices will be beyond the means of our staff. This is where we will come in and be able to assist our staff in buying their staple or rice at extremely exorbitant prices. Another obstacle we are facing is that food is used as a political tool to force the people to be loyal to the government. This simply means if you want to eat you will be a card holder that supports the government's party. If you are known to be a political opponent to the ruling party or from an area that is known to be apposing the ruling party, you simply do not get cheap government subsidized food. We have a very difficult situation in front of us and we are doing what we feel needs to be done first and that is to make sure we have the finances to care for our staff. We have on hand $2979. towards staff food assistance. It will cost $1302.96 per month. We are looking at seven months food assistance which will total $9120.72. We will delay supplying food assistance until it is absolutely necessary. The reason for this is that we hope to stretch this money until next May which will be the next harvest season. Thank you to each of you who have given thus far... :-) The shipping container is in Zimbabwe but those in charge at customs are waiting for us to pay a bribe. We know this because we were informed by people we trust that this is the case. We do have people working on the situation who have some swaying powers in this area and await the Lord to deal with the situation at hand. We request that prayers go up for the release of the container due to the fact that people gave from their hearts towards this need, the goods are greatly needed at the camp and it is costing us $52 dollars a day storage. We have four weeks of storage fees at this time which totals to $1456.00. As you can see this individual at customs feels we will pay him due to the storage fees we incur. Please keep this a matter of prayer and we will keep you informed as to the progression of the situation. Simba has sent us an update of the work in Zimbabwe. We want to share this with you so you can have more of a first hand view of the ministry happenings. If when you read this you have some questions, feel free to write us for clarification. *Dear Mark & Helen Weekly Update CYC UPDATE * Tatenda and staff (Melody, Jamie & Frances) started the new program on Saturday and they had about 50 kids. Frances and Melody taught the 3 & 4's, Jamie 5&6's combined and Chiz 1 & 2's combined. I think the lesson time went well and the teachers encouraged the students to take down notes. After the lesson time they had memory work time. The specialty groups have been reduced to 4; namely the Dance, Drama, Mime and Music groups. Tatenda hopes that they will practice and work on their presentations that will be presented to schools and also in public; orphanages, hospital and also at Cooksey hall (the Municipality hall), the main job is to work on the different presentations that they may present quality. Tatenda has started working with Elliot and hopes to continue on volunteer basis for sometime. Friday program has changed to a sport program. Last week on Friday Tatenda and Jamie met with the youth at the volleyball court in town near Jamie's place and they had a volleyball practice session. Every Friday they will have a sport session and hope that more youth in the area will join the group being drawn by the sport outreach on Fridays. Tatenda and Frances met and they came up with the budget for May which is below: Exercise books (notebooks for the new program) X 90 - $ 270 000 Pens X - $ 860 000 Weekend - $ 420 000 Photocopying - $ 300 000 Sticky - $ 20 000 Cello - $ 15 000 Bike - $ 200 000 Bond - $ 250 000 Staples - $ 20 000 White - $ 40 000 Glue - $ 30 000 Thank you gift for volunteer - $ 100 000 Evangelistic Small - $ 650 000 Total $2 675 000 Zim. dollars $178.33 USD *STUDENT SUPPORT * I met with Mr Mayoyo and he gave me his monthly report and I managed to see what he had been working on the previous month. *Enrolment and Interviews:* During the month of April he interviewed a student named Marlvin on the 25th. At first he thought he would qualify to be in the program but through further investigations he found out that he did not qualify. He also interviewed another Student who was about 16 years and had been out of School since January this year. He had considered him to join the program and I had already taken a photo of him to send to you but later on he came and told me that the boy's attitude and comprehension of the rules and regulations was not satisfactory. There is another student he is considering to enroll and he is still undertaking interviews with the student's relatives. I explained to Mr. Mayoyo that you needed more students for the supporters and also I expressed the urgency of having them as soon as possible. One thing he expressed to me why it takes time to enroll a new student is that it is hard to find the true facts especially when the relatives lie about the status of the individual's life. *Discipline: * I asked him about the student's performance and the discipline being undertaken to help them out. We talked about Kembo and he has not yet withdrawn the sports attire from him. When I asked him why he had not, he said he had given Kembo the option to quit sports on his own accord. Mr Mayoyo seems to be hesitant to take the initiative of the discipline measure. He said that he was afraid that Georgina will start thinking that since she is no longer employed by us we are trying to get back at her on her son. I explained to him that we are not going to let fear of anyone dictate the program and if we do so that will kill everything that we are trying to do to help out with the kids (he seems to be afraid of Georgina). I will be getting feedback from him this week about the progress of withdrawing the sport clothing from Kembo. *Student Dropout * Talent one of the new students who was enrolled earlier this year, has dropped out of the program. Her grandma simply decided to put her in school at Zurungowe Secondary School without notifying Mr. Mayoyo, the reason given was that she no longer had accommodation in Chinhoyi, since the relatives she was staying with were no longer in good books with the family. So he visited the family and he took the school uniforms from her. He says such occurrences are teaching him to take more time in approving enrolment for a new student. *Buying and Recording School supplies: * School supplies were bought and distributed to the Students. He bought exercise books, pens & shoe polish. *School fees: * School levies were paid in all schools except Chirorodziva and Chaedza Primary Schools. School fees for Nemakonde and Chirorodziva was not paid because the schools did not have receipt books. He hopes to pay it when the Schools are ready to receive the school fees when they have the receipt books this month. *Home Visits: * He did one visit to Kembo's place on the 25 of April and the object of the visit was to talk about his grades. *School visits * No school visits were made for the purpose of assessing morals and academic performance of the students. He says he was not able to because he was trying to keep up with the fees and interviews, I expect him to visit this month. *Counseling: * He talked and counseled Ruvimbo Mutobaya because she had lost her mother. *CYC attendance / Sunday attendance: * All students seem to do well in attending CYC. Ruvimbo missed a week of CYC and Sunday service because she was not feeling well. Tafadzwa missed one Sunday because she was not feeling well (Stomach bug). *Library Records * The records were done on the opening meeting and every book seemed to be in the library record book. He needs to follow - up on a book borrowed by Kenneth. *Tutoring of slower Students: * He gave Kembo and Patience some school work to do. Patience shows zeal and Kembo is continuing to be lazy, he says he needs patience. *Files: * Files which have the student's information are now available and he started working on them last month. I looked at them and he needs to update the termly reports, because most of them do no have the students grade's for first term and the previous terms and he needs to file the signed agreement forms. I will continue to meet with him weekly. * FRANCES _ ACCOUNTING UPDATE * I started working with Frances and we filed receipts and laid out the bills that need to be paid each month. We paid most of the bills last week as they came in the mail box. I will continue working with him this week introducing the computerized accounts and also updating the checkbook. His duties are going to be (I will be working with him on this) updating the check book Filing Receipts Paying Bills Computerized Accounting HRC Ministries Monthly budget Checking mail (Post office Box) Checking: and Replacing light bulbs and toiletries in the office Office equipment Stationery & Supplies Checking & Updating Fuel Logbook (fuel in drums) Checking & updating Tool register (Tool room) Helping out to check and keep up with repairs and maintenance on Vehicles. *INC UPDATE * Sandy wrote a check for the amount of 3000 @ exchange 15000. and Mark S had already given us the amount for the 1000 @ 15000 giving a total of $60m zim this month. *CAMP * I have set up for Admire to be paid through A/C no. 2 now. Gabe and Tawanda will access his invoice and then present it to me and I will write a check to A/c No.2 as a loan. Another issue that arose was NSSA, they had written a letter saying that we owed them $1 490 000 for the staff that was working at the camp. I met with them last week to find out what the whole deal was. They had not updated their records of HRC Camp, they still assumed that we still had fulltime working for us. I explained that we had 4 guys working for us on contract basis at the camp and after further inquiring and explanation I found out that they require companies to pay dues for anyone working for them even those on contract basis after 18 working days. So the 4 guys working at the camp qualify to have dues paid to NSSA. The amount that we were supposed to pay after the 18 days of contract for 4 months worked out to be $311 000 and not the $ 1, 4m they had initially required us to pay. *UNIVERSITY / COLLEGE SUPPORT * Simba Nzozi has finished his second semester and he is heading out to an attachment for the coming month doing the practical aspect of their studies. He says he is doing well and we gave him $328 000 to have a medical exam and finger print testing which are required to be checked before a person goes for an attachment. The last I heard from Zondai and Henry they were doing well, I hope to see them when I make a trip to Harare to give Andrew the title deeds. Shame Left for Harare to go To Zimbabwe Christian College last week on Thursday. We gave him $1 040 000 for his Schooling which includes school fees, food and Accommodation (which is provided at the college), stationery & Bus fare. I wrote up a contract that he agreed to and signed. *MR CHANDO - Furniture * I gave Mr. Chando the money you had left for a loan for furniture. He said he will look for some furniture to buy and he might need to pay deposit for it. I gave him a total amount of $2000 000. *NISSAN REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE * Barr's Garage gave me the invoice for repairing the Nissan and I sat down with Jamie for the repairs repayment schedule, and he will be paying HRC through a deduction method. He will be paying $230 000 every month. The total bill was $1 343 407 *JEEP * I called Barr's Garage this morning and they have not managed to fix the jeep yet. Rob said he was having a hard time to figure out the model, and he said later this week they found out that it is an odd model and Mike Appel is scheming the crankshaft. He says that I should call him on Thursday afternoon to find out whether he is done or not. I guess the wisest thing to do now is not to push him too hard and let him take his time to get it done properly than to have it done now and have problems in the future. *SITUATION AROUND TOWN - ZESA & FUEL * The ZESA situation has improved we did not have a power cut for about a week and half now!!! The fuel situation has slightly improved also, there is one service station that seems to have fuel all the time (the one at Winsock garage) though you always find a long queue. *STAFF BREAK IN JUNE * The staff one week break in June will be starting on the 27th to the 2 July I hope the camps are going well for you, may God bless you greatly, appreciate all your prayers. praying for you too. In Christ Simba P Gabe Gurley work permit is still in question. Gabe has now to renew his work permit on May 20th, hoping to get a three year clearance. This has been a very trying time for the family but a growing time in resting in the Lords provision. We ask that you be in prayer for the family and the Lords will to come about for them and HRC Ministries. We are making plans to operate the camp with the assistant manager if we need to go in that direction. We will see what the Lord will do in all of this. Hunnington Retreat Center continues to receive bookings. Work on the Marriage Retreat Houses continues to move forward. All the foundations are in place and are working to complete the remaining 10 houses. Each house cost 500 dollars to build and 500 to furnish at this time. We have been working at this as the money is made available to us. We are grateful to all who have given towards this project. It is taking longer than we had hoped but all good things come in the Lord's timing. This will be a great outreach to the young married adults and will give us room to have two youth camps running at the same time when the facility is not in use for marriage retreats. This is a ministry opportunity for Christian groups, Church groups and Sunday School classes. If you want to know more about getting involved in this area on a personal level please email and we will do all we can to inform you and guide you as to how you can help. *Summer Itineraries: * *Ministry of Outreach & Development /Mike and Kim Frazier * June 5-10 VBS Mechanicsburg C July 9 HRC Board Meeting, Lexington July 17-21 VBS Cayuga CC Aug 1 VBS-RisingSun CC (day care) Aug. 7 New Whiteland CC Oct. 23-26 Revival- Southside CC Nov. 17-20 National Missionary Convention *Kelly Carter * June 5-10 VBS-Center CC June 12-16 VBS-Crosspoint CC June 16-30 VBS-Wilkinson Cof C July 17-21 VBS-Anderson CC Aug. 7-11 Camp Illiana *Lori Wanner * June - Aug Hanging Rock Christian Assembly * Mark and Helen Begarly * April 26 Seniors Day (Rainbow) May 1 Northside Bapt. Lift up the lost that the Lord's commission would go forth through this ministry. Give thanks for the churches and individuals, who give prayerfully and financially towards this ministry. Lift up the Zimbabwe staff and ministry that the Lord would continue to guard us and them from men who have evil designs in their hearts toward the ministry. Those of you who are helping in this ministry, ask the Lord to bless what you do. If you are not actively involved, then ask the Lord to show you where he wants you to work. Thank you and may God bless you more than you can imagine or hope for his glory. In Christ, Mark and Helen We're in touch so you be in touch |
Monday February 12, 2001 Dear friends of Mark and Helen - I received e-mail from Mark and Helen today with a request to be passed on to you. They have respectfully requested that you not send them "forwards." With their system, it takes forever to download them - translated, it is expensive for them to receive them. They are charged for their time on-line, rather than a flat monthly rate that most of us enjoy. This can get quite expensive for them. Of course, they are thrilled to receive any personal e-mails you might want to send and will be happy to hear from you if you wish to write. The forwards however are not a good idea for them. They appreciate you thinking of them and what they might enjoy, but the expense and time makes it prohibitive. Thanks for your thoughtfulness |
