The Russian River Meets the Ozone Layer
Reducing total low dose toxic chemical effects, while saving money
Back to Paradigms & Projects

Short Abstract - Overview

Update note of March 12, 2002:
Ozone is created by lightning. The question is "what is created when various forms of pollution are present
in the storm cloud"?

The posted e-mail's concern pesticides. But there is also a concern of the
pollution created around airports. and what migh manifest in such a polluted storm cloud from lightning ?

Simple Hypothesis: The Total Toxic Effect of two chemicals can multiply to be hundreds of times as toxic as either one, alone.
Plus, radiation can increase the Toxic Effect by ten to thirty times. By forming "Pesticide Buyer's Co-ops", the growers (farmers) that use them could reduce costs and reduce the Total Toxic Effect by using the same pesticide. Most of which eventually mix into the rivers and streams. The manufactures of the pesticides could also reduce their costs and sell their pesticides for less money, while earning a greater profit. This could be accomplishes by having the Pesticide Buyer's Co-op handle the warehousing and transportation of the chemicals. Restructuring the manner in which these chemicals are dispersed is also a matter of national security, due to the potential for the abuse of these chemicals, by terrorist's.

The following posted e-mail's, link's, and correspondence cite the research work that is also supportive of this hypothesis. Regardless of the wide spread use of pesticides is proven to be a factor in the production of the ozone depleting chemical SF5CF3. The obvious health benefits to the environment, coupled with the potential return on investment should make this a logical course of action.

Until now, waterborne perchlorate (ClO[sub 4]-) has been linked almost
exclusively to aerospace activities, since the compound is a major
ingredient in rocket fuels. An Environmental Protection Agency study now
reports evidence of a far more prosaic and potentially widespread
source: garden-variety fertilizers.

The strategy that I have developed to circumvent the "politics" involved is posted at -

Russian Roulette - American Style

Please do not under estimate the power that potential liability suits can have on this. The strategy that I have posted (above) might "turn the trick".

Research studies with these stated concepts in mind are needed. The pertinent information to this is posted through out the rest of this page. You will have to "connect the dots" for yourself, if interested.

This would appear to be a good project by which to study any variance in the health of the environment. In particular, the Russian River. Many of the grape growers in this county and Napa County could stand to save some money while trying to help the environment.

Pesticide manufactures can dramatically
reduce their overhead, sell the pesticides for less,
while realizing a greater profit.

A "Pesticide Buyers Co-op" can also be used to "re-
organize". Handle the transportation, warehousing of
the chemicals. While encouraging growers to use the
same chemicals. Many of which can become hundreds of
times as toxic when combined, as any one alone.
This would reducing the total toxic effect on the
environment.

Because of the "nature" of our political system, I
believe it might be best to just present the money
saving potential.

Who is to blame? We are.

You have made some very valuable (sharp) observations. I believe the source
of the SF5CF3 has been found, Bill Sturges reckons that it is the Scotch
guard production.

I am interested in measuring the large range transportation of pollutants
(including pesticides, although their concentrations are very low which
makes detection difficult) using an aircraft. If you would have the name
and address of one of the best technical experts in the field of research
on pesticide transport in your country, that would be useful.

Otherwise, I lack the time to go into discussions, for which I apologize.

EMF's Effects on Radon, plus hypothesis on EMF effects on *.*

Document 158

Title: Are pylons and radon a lethal cocktail.
Source: New-Scientist. Feb 17, 1996. v149(n2017). p4(1).
Illustration: photograph.
Abstract:

Researchers at the University of Bristol in the UK claim that
electromagnetic fields (EMF) can intensify the carcinogenic effects of
radon gas. By measuring the concentration of radon decay products and
EMF strength in homes located in regions with high background radiation,
the researchers concluded that strong EMFs attract radon decay products
and cause them to vibrate, thus making them more likely to adhere to human
tissue.

"What effect could that have on the production of ozone, by lightning, from the
perspective of pesticides interacting with the EMF's ? Could it cause chemicals
to stratify in the storm clouds ?"

Note about the synergistic toxic effects of pesticides.

The article was "discredited". But has been vindicated. Though it must be remembered that we are now talking about "Military Grade Nerve Gas".

>PESTICIDES and CUMULATIVE EFFECT: A study published in the journal
Science has found that pesticides which by themselves are linked to breast cancer
and male birth defects are up to 1,000 times more potent when combined.
Such findings could force a revolution in the way that the environmental
and health effects of pesticides are measured. "Instead of one plus one
equaling two, we found in some cases that one plus one equals a thousand,"
said study leader John McLachlan of Tulane University.

>A new potent greenhouse gas of industrial origin has been discovered in
the atmosphere
>
>Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, from the
School of Environmental Science at University of East Anglia/ UK, Ford
Motor Company/USA, University of Reading/UK, University of Frankfurt and
British Antarctic Survey, Natural Environment Research Council in
Cambridge/UK have detected a previously unreported compound in the
atmosphere, trifluoromethyl sulphur pentaflouride (SF5CF3). The increase of
this peculiar gas in the atmosphere is coupled with the increase of the
very inert gas sulfur hexaflouride (SF6), suggesting a common source
(Science, 28 July 2000).
>
>There is no doubt that the new gas SF5CF3 is made by industry, or is
produced during certain process involving industrial gases, but its exact
source remains a mystery. The scientists speculate that SF5CF3, which is
closely chemically related to SF6, originates as a breakdown product of SF6
in high voltage equipment. SF6 is used in electrical switches to suppress
sparks, in protecting metals during a melting process, in tennis balls, car
tires and even at one stage in running shoes. Due to its good insulation
properties it was also used as a noise barrier in double glazed window
panes. However, SF6 is a strong greenhouse gas and the molecule is very
resistant against attack in the atmosphere. The natural self-cleansing
property of the atmosphere is insufficient to deal with such super
molecules. Therefore, it has a long lifetime, and being a strong greenhouse
gas, its production is now restricted under the Kyoto Protocol.
>
>The new molecule SF5CF3 is even a stronger greenhouse gas. Measurements of
its infrared absorption cross-section revealed the largest radiative
forcing, on a per molecule basis, of any gas found in the atmosphere to
date (0.57 W/m2 ppb). Together with the fact that also this gas has a long
lifetime - somewhere between several hundred and a few thousand years -
there is good reason to know more about this gas, and to try to stop its
increase in the atmosphere.
>
>How do we know the atmospheric increase of this gas? The Max Planck
Institute for Chemistry in Mainz has participated in expeditions in
Antarctica to extract air samples from the thick firn layers (snow). These
layers can be up to 100 meter thick and contain old air, sometimes reaching
to the beginning of the last century. This air has been extensively
analyzed in our institute and in Norwich, England. The new gas was
discovered at extremely low concentrations. At the surface the
concentration is the same as in the air at the moment, and amounts to about
0.1 ppt (parts per trillion; one ppt is one part in 1012). At 100 meter
depth in the snow its concentration was close to the detection level of
0.01 ppt. This shows the grown of the gas during the second half of the
last century. Because the increase of the new gas is very much like that of
SF6, we suspect a link between the two gases.
>
>This discovery once again shows that we have to be careful with our
atmosphere, and that research is much needed indeed. Without even knowing
it, we have been releasing a very potent greenhouse gas for almost 50
years. We have to find the source of this gas and to try to stop its
increase. Even though the concentrations are very small, and its
implication in climate change is for practical reasons no grave concern,
this type of global pollution is unwanted, and most likely unnecessary.
