Dragon Force

Long ago, in the lovely land of Legendra (hey that ryhmes!) the Dark Dragon Madruk appeared, hell-bent on destroying the world Astea the Goddess created. He was met on the battlefield by the sacred dragon Harsgalt. The battle was epic, but in the end Madruk was cast into a deep sleep (arent all demonic hell-spawn) long enough for eight chosen heroes to be born (how convenient.) Ok, so I'm not thrilled about the initial premise of the game. But such a shallow introduction soon gives way to one lengthy, deep, and very enjoyable gaming experience. And now u will know why this is my favorite Saturn game of all time:

GRAPHICS: Nothing special, but battlefields are large in scope, the cinemas are beautiful, and ya gotta love the anime art style used. And I don't care if Teiris is the game's standard issue generic elfin girl, sh..she's....mmmmmm...

SOUND: Incredible orchestral soundtrack with an adventurous flair. Swords and shields *clink* and *clank* realistically in battle. Attack spells roar outward when cast by your general.

CONTROL: Such a simple domesitc affairs menu complemented by the slightly more complex battle tactics. But you never feel too bogged down. Hey Madruk, flank THIS!

GAMEPLAY: The battles are incredible, with you issuing simple to complex commands to your troops. Different units have varying levels of effectiveness against each other. Ex-archers shoot down airborne harpies with ease. Effective strategies must be employed, but dont expect Panzer General-like attention to detail. BTW, did I mention there are eight different quests, some of which involve a villain as the playable character, too cool.

GRAPHICS: 8 SOUND: 10 CONTROL: 9 GAMEPLAY: 10 OVERALL: 9½

Working Designs proved yet once more they were the best reason to own the now-defunct Saturn. Thanks for one of the few true gems to remember an otherwise disappointing system by WD.
