Resident Evil 2

Ah, the pure gaming goodness that is in this little gem from Capcom is a tru wonder to behold. The second in a series of action/adventure/horror games, RE 2 takes the best elements from the first and expands them at least ten fold.

GRAPHICS
Wow. Thats what you wil be thinking from the opening cinema to the closing credits. The game starts with a CG cinema that rivals Namco's best offering, with my only complaint being that the human faces look a bit too rubery. But hey, who hell cares right? From the beautiful cinema, you are thrust right into the game. It starts off in a desolate city street with flames in the background, and a ton of zombies coming at you on all sides. From that hectic intro, you will travel in the game through shops, sewers, buses. libraries, and many other locations. Each room you travel in is viewed via fixed camera angles that are very well positioned to give you a good view of the action. The backgrounds are pre-rendered in exquisit detail and approach Myst like quality[ but with way better gameplay of course]. The main characters, Leon and Claire are well detailed, and move nicely. The enemies however, take the cake. From the lowly zombie to the big daddy end boss, these are some truly freaky beasts. Each monster has its own unique movements and attacks, and can be blown into seperate pieces. Got a bit of extra ammo?[This will be rare!] Try blowing the legs, then the arms, then the heads off a group of adancing zombies. And please, try not to laugh. I really can't think of a single bad thing to say about these graphics.

SOUND
Ah, the bone chilling sound returns in full force. The music is instrumental and ultra creepy. I'm not kidding, the music is the creepiest I have ever heard on a PSX games[ The scariest music on the PSX goes to GRAN TOURISMO though]. And the sound effects are top notch. Each weapon has it's own sound, from the ematy roar of the shotgun to the whining crack of the pistol. And the enemies make their own sounds too. You will be able to tell what enemy is coming just based on the wet sloching noise that they make. And the moans from the zombies are way too cool. Oh, and the bad voice acting from the original makes a strong comeback. While there is no "master of unlocking" line, Ada's 976 phone sex voice, Leon's stick up his ass, and Sherry's demon possesed child voice more than made up for it. And Claire just needed to be gut shot.

CONTROL
Top notch control too. Nothing really too earth shattering here, if you played RE1, you will have no problems with RE2. If not, the control will only take about 10 minutes to get used to it. Everything is layed out in a very logical manner, so there is never any mindless button mashing.

GAMEPLAY
Sweet. Just sweet. The gameplay is the perfect combination of action and puzzle solving. The enemies are fun too waste, and when they come in hordes,, you WILL be sweating bullets. And there are also moments when enemies will just bust out of nowhere, and it is truly scary. There are also a couple of cool boss monsters that are fun to beat. Once you beat the game once with each character, you can go back and beat it again with each one to get alternate endings. After that, you can play as a SWAT team member, or a hunk of Tofu[ no I am not kidding]. And there are the outfit and weapon changes for the characters too. So replayability is very high. My only complaint is with the shooting, you can't run and shoot at the same time. But other than that, there is no problem. And, there is now a version out with Dual Analog Shock support, so your control shakes when you start busting caps. Mmmmm...shock...mmm Whatever your tastes, this game is a shining example of PSX quality.
