Psi Iota Xi Sorority was founded in Muncie, Indiana in September of 1897. The charter members of Alpha chapter were three high school teachers (Mrs. Martha Ivins, Miss Emma Cammack and Miss Eve Kessler) and five of their female students (Huda Smith Kimbrough, Ethelyn Dowell Hinckley, Mary Louise Carmichael, Sue Derexa Smith and Mayme Johnson Oesterle). |
The first Helicon(meaning:Abode of Apollo and the 9 Muses) was published that same year. Eventually, it would grow, from those high school roots, to become the sorority's national publication. |
Three years later, Beta chapter was established in Evansville, Indiana. The first convention was held in 1903, in Muncie. By 1910, there were 10 community chapters (legislation had recently banned secret organizations from Indiana High Schools). |
