Chapter One

September

"Jana, you won't believe the good news I have for you!" sixteen-year-old Michelle Clarke said, ecstatic. She put her lunch tray down next to Jana Chong's, one of her best friends. Michelle sat down, and started forking her salad. "I've got really cool news."

"What?" Jana asked, wiping her mouth with a napkin. "The lunch lady didn't poison the salad today?"

"Ha, ha, very funny," replied Michelle. "No. Actually, there is a new guy in my class. His name is Justin Timberlake, and he is pretty fine."

Jana's eyes widened. "Oh, really?" she said, interested. "What does he look like?"

"Oh, blonde curly hair, blue eyes, tall…" said Michelle. She sipped her Pepsi. "I just know that you'll think he's hot. Anyway, after what happened between you and that jerk, JC, I think it's time to find a new guy."

Jana's heart sank at the sound of that name. JC Chasez was her recent ex-boyfriend, and he had hurt her badly. She was still not completely over him. She looked down at her food, not feeling hungry anymore. Michelle looked at Jana, and mentally kicked herself in the head. You are soo stupid! You shouldn't have mentioned him, thought Michelle. She cleared her throat.

"I'm sorry for mentioning him," she said softly.

"Oh, I don't care," Jana fibbed with a lump in her throat. "I am completely over that jerk!" Under the table her hand crumpled the napkin. It had been hard to get over JC Chasez. She and him had been together since their junior year of high school. The whole school had known them as JCand Jana. It had been a wonderful relationship-until the nasty breakup. JC had been tempted to be with Britney Spears, Lincoln High School's most seductive cheerleader. He had always been faithful to Jana, as far as she knew, but once Britney had sparked an interest in him, JC knew he couldn't win. JC had picked up Jana sometimes at her school. Jana did not know that Britney had been talking to him secretly whenever he came around in his car. Jana had invited JC to one of her school's pep rallies. It all ended when Jana had caught them making out the night of one of the school's pep rallies. She had been appalled, and had run away from them. JC, who was too ashamed, didn't speak to her for a month. He finally apologized through a letter, but Jana had just burned it with hate.

"Anyway," Michelle said quickly, changing the subject, "back to that guy, Justin. Oh, great! Here he comes right now! Jana, look."

Jana turned around. She saw a tall, muscular guy, with blonde curly hair, and deep blue eyes. She breathed in slowly. Oh my God, Michelle was not joking! This guy is too good to be true! she thought. He was heading their way. Jana nearly tipped over her Pepsi can. Justin looked her way and gave her a smile. Jana flushed pink.

"I saw him smile at you," whispered Michelle, as she and Jana watched Justin go into the lunch line. "He's got a killer smile!"

Jana turned to Michelle, pink. "Oh, Shelle," she gushed, "I think I am over JC. Justin is gorgeous."

"And get this," Michelle replied. "He's got a G.P.A. of four-point-oh, and he has a basketball scholarship!"

Jana smiled. She wondered what it would be like to have another relationship with a guy. She was definitely afraid of being hurt again.

"Well, look who's coming," she said with a smirk. "Your boyfriend." Michelle turned her head around, only to see Lance Bass, her good friend, coming towards their table with a tray. She whirled her head around.

"He is not my boyfriend!" she hissed at Jana, giving her a "I-don't-believe-you-said-that" look.

"Hey," Lance's voice chimed from behind Michelle. "Did I hear the word 'boyfriend'? Shelle, you got a boyfriend?"

"No," said Michelle, laughing. She moved the tray over so that Lance could put his down. "Oh my goodness, Lance. What did you buy?" She stared at Lance's tray, which had three cheeseburgers and two Dr. Peppers. "Are you planning to eat all of that?"

"Actually, yes." Lance laughed.

Michelle shook her head in disbelief. "And you still manage to stay fit!"

He started unwrapping the first cheeseburger. "I know," he teased. "Do you want a bite?"

Michelle placed a hand in front of her. "No thanks," she said. "I've eaten to much of those in the past few days. I'm going to get fat."

"Fat?" Lance chuckled and pinched her side. "Yeah, right."

"Um, are we getting a little personal here?" Jana taunted, looking at them both with a grin. "'Cause you know, I can just leave you both alone-"

"Jana, shut it!" Michelle laughed with Lance.

She turned to Lance and gave him a puppy-dog face. "I-I changed my mind…Could I have a bite, please?" she asked sweetly. Lance handed her his burger and Michelle thanked him. She bit into it.

"My God, woman! Ravenous, huh?" Michelle threw him a dirty look through chews.

Jana laughed. "You guys sound like a married couple!" she remarked as she observed them.

"Lance, you shouldn't say the Lord's name in vain," said Michelle reminded him. She handed him back his cheeseburger, which had a huge gap in it.

Jana sighed and watched as Lance and Michelle insulted each other. They look like a sweet couple, she thought longingly. At least they've got each other. I have no one. Jana, stop feeling sorry for yourself. Oh my God, there's Justin. She sat up quickly, alert.

Michelle nudged Jana. "Look who decided to drop by…" she whispered. She looked up and so did Jana. Justin was standing in front of them with his own tray.

"Uh, hi," Justin said coyly. "Do you guys have room for one more person?" He smiled at the whole table. Jana's knees went weak as he smiled.

"Um, of course," she mumbled. His presence made her blush again. "You must be the new student," Jana said, trying to make conversation.

Justin glanced at Michelle. "Hey, you're in my class, right?" he said with a grin.

Michelle nodded. "Yep. Justin, I'd like you to meet Jana and Lance. They're my best friends."

Justin nodded. "Nice to meet y'all," he said with a southern drawl. Jana giggled.

Lance just smiled. "I'm kind of shy," he admitted.

"Do you think one of you could show me around the campus one of these days?"

"I'd be glad to," Jana volunteered. "We've got a huge campus."

"Tell me about it," Justin replied. "I lost my way trying to find the office." He stared at his plate of lasagna. "Uh, is this edible?"

Michelle laughed. "Not really," she said. "They never make the food here edible."

"Well," Justin said slowly, "I don't know. I'd feel guilty if I didn't eat it…"

Ring! the lunch bell sounded. Students groaned in the cafeteria and started standing up. People filed out of the cafeteria.

"There goes the bell," Lance replied to Justin with a smirk, crumpling his third cheeseburger wrapper. "Now you don't have to eat your lunch."

"Hello?" JC Chasez answered the phone, half-asleep. He was woken up by the sound of a high-pitched squealing voice.

"JC!" Britney screeched into the phone. JC rolled his eyes in aggravation. "I have been trying to call you for the past three hours! Where were you?"

The last thing JC wanted was Britney calling him. He had tried avoiding her for weeks, but it was impossible. He felt very guilty about his relationship with her. He knew it couldn't last. He still had feelings for Jana. "Britney, are you crazy?" JC scolded. He sighed. "It's eleven at night!"

"Oh." Britney was quiet. "I'm sorry, JC. I didn't mean to wake you up…"

JC was annoyed, but then he softened up. "Baby, I'm sorry," he apologized. "I didn't mean to get all pissed off at you."

Britney giggled on the other line. "Oh, JC, how could you ever stay mad at me?" she said in a syrupy voice.

JC sighed. Why did Britney have to be so annoying tonight? But then again, why did she have to be sexy? Britney was a temptation. Every guy in Lincoln High wanted her, but JC had won her. JC attended Emerson High School. It had started at one of Jana's pep rallies. She had taken him along, and left him. Then alone, he had met the stupefying Britney Spears, and the rest was history. That temptation had cost him his girlfriend. "You're right…I could never stay mad at you for long," he said huskily into the phone. "I love you too much, baby." Yeah, right. You don't even love her. It's lust, not love! JC scolded himself. He couldn't continue playing these games. He had to break things off with Britney, as soon as possible. "Britney…I-I…"

"You what?" Britney asked softly. "You love me, right?" There was silence at the other end of the line.

JC couldn't get the words out of his mouth. Say it! Tell her the truth! Tell her that you can't do this! thought JC. JC cursed under his breath.

"JC, something wrong?" asked Britney with concern. "I really am sorry for calling you this late. I didn't mean for you to be angry with me. I'll talk to you some other time, if you want…"

"No, no, no, it's not that." JC was confused himself. He didn't know what he wanted. Did he want a relationship with Britney? Could they make it last? He was still in love with Jana, it was crystal-clear. He also didn't want to hurt Britney. "I have to go," he said hoarsely. "Bye, Brit. I'll call you later." He hung up the phone and exhaled sharply. What was he getting himself into? He pulled the sheets over him and tried to get back to sleep.

"That would be our gym," Jana said to Justin, pointing to the white building on their right. "It's pretty big, huh?"

"Yeah, I'd say," Justin said, amazed. "Well, I mean compared to my old school."

"So, where are you from again?"

"Memphis, Tennessee."

"Oh, that's right." She and Justin continued walking around the school's campus. It had been a long day. Jana had enjoyed Justin's company. He was sweet, intelligent, and had a sense of humor. They had hit it off right from the start, and she was starting to enjoy herself again. Forget JC! she thought happily, as she listened to one of Justin's cheesy jokes. She ended up laughing. "Justin, that was the corniest joke I have ever heard," she said, doubling with laughter. She rested her hand on his broad shoulder for support. "Where do you get all these jokes?"

Justin shrugged and grinned. "Well, back in Tennessee, my friend and I told these jokes all the time. They are fruity, huh?"

Jana nodded vigorously. "But at least you have a sense of humor, and that's important."

"Is it?" Justin questioned, looking into Jana's eyes. For a moment, they were gazing into each other's eyes.

Jana snapped out of it first. "So, how do you like it here?" she asked him awkwardly. "Is it really different from Tennessee?"

"Heck, yeah!" Justin replied, nodding. He picked a flower from a bush right next to him and played with it. "It's a whole lot different. The people back in Tennessee are so laid back. Here…Well, they're a little more outgoing here."

"Oh," Jana said. "Is that a bad thing?"

"Not at all," Justin assured her. He handed her the pink flower. "Here," he said, placing it in the palm of her hand, "this is for you." He gave her a shy smile.

Jana blushed in surprise. "I-I don't know what to say," she stammered. She looked at the small flower in her hand. "I love it."

"Well," Justin said playfully, "I'd say that your cheeks are about the same shade as that flower."

Jana bent her head down, speechless, but loving every minute of it. "Thank you, Justin," she said. "It's very pretty."

"Just like you?"

Jana gave him a sexy smile. "You think so?"

"Of course," he said sincerely, with his southern drawl. Jana felt like she was in heaven. It was like Justin was possibly…her soul mate. Now that was scary. Justin took her hand and his fingers entwined with hers. "I know that this is going to sound a little odd, but would you like to go on a date with me one of these days? We don't know each other very well, but I'd be willing to get to know you better."

Jana looked up mutely, not knowing what do say or do. Her body stiffened, but as Justin squeezed her hand tighter, she eased up.

"I'm not good at asking girls out," he confessed, blushing. "But if you'd go out with me one of these days, it would make me very happy. It would just a fun date. I would take you and my friends."

"Oh, Justin-"

"Would you go out with me?" Justin interrupted, with a pleading look in his eyes. Jana couldn't resist his blue eyes. She smiled up at him. "Okay, when?"
