Princess Diana gave birth to a 7 pound, 1 1/2 ounce, blue-eyed baby boy yesterday, who cried lustily as he made his way into
a life destined to be filled with pomp and privilege. The infant was born at 9:03 P.M. in St. Mary’s Hospital in Pddington,
North London, after his mother endured nearly 17 hours of labor. Prince Charles, 33, who accompanied his wife to the
hospital, was at Diana’s bedside all the while, and observed the delivery of his heir and second in line to the British throne....
Two hours after the birth, Charles emerged from the hospital and was mobbed by well- wishers. One of the first to question
him was New York Post representative Harry Arnold, who asked how it went. “Nearly 17 hours is a long time to wait,” the
Prince said. “Obviously I’’m relieved, delighted.... I think it’s marvelous. It’s rather a grown-up thing, I’ve found. It’s rather a
shock.” Arnold asked the Prince: Does the baby have hair?” “It’s blond, sort of fairish,” Charles responded. “Have you picked
a name yet? Smiling, Charles replied, each word measured: “We have a few names in mind. You’ll have to ask my wife about
that. There is an argument about it.” Someone in the crowd yelled, “Is he the most beautiful baby in the world?” The Prince
grinned, “He’s not bad.” “Is he like his dad?” someone else asked. “No,” the Prince shot back. “He’s lucky enough not to be.”
The somone shouted, “Give us another one, Charlie!.” The Prince shook his head. “You’ll have to ask my wife about that....”
He let his words drift for a moment. Then he shot back: “Bloody hell, give us a chance!” - by George Carpozi Jr. (New York

He is a Prince born to be King- second in succession to the British crown and heir to immense wealth and privilege. But he also
burdened from the opening hours of his life with awsome responsibility. And the shape of much of his life will be decided by
national and family traditions. one or two have already been broken. Prince Charles was born with an embarrased British
government minister present. Queen Elizabeth broke that tradition with the rest of her confinements, and Princess Di is the first
royal mother to give birth to a direct heir to the throne without a cabinet witness. Princess Di has brokedn another tradition by
insisting on breat-feeding her child.... Like all royal children, the little Prince will have a nanny-but tradition has been broken
here, too. Princess Di, demonstratin her renowed independence of spirit, insisted on choosing her own nanny, turning down the
suggestions of the Queen, her mother-in-law, and snubbing Mabel Anderson, who was Charles's own nanny. Princess Di
decided she wanted someone who would not take a "Nanny knows best" attitude as an older woman might have been
inclinedto do.... Princess Di, who cared for children in a nursery school before she became engaged, has also insisted that her
son travel with her when she is on royal tours. That is still a matter of debate in the royal household. -by Peter Fearon (New
