Sure there is some good stuff to be said about Anne. Buffy is finally doing her job as a waitress, she's kind of depressed but still willing to fight the forces of evil or whatever 0:-) and her hair didn't look like it did in the promos. Giles also has a studly new do and Xander keeps getting better looking. Willow's hair looks awesome and really red - not that boring washed out red from last season. Oz looks normal and is still in high school. Oh yeah Cordelia got a tan.
BUT why was the most impressing part of this episode everyone's new haircut???
I mean the overall feeling I was left with was: Man!!! This episode SUCKS!!!
I'm obviously a big fan and as an avid watcher I must concede that some episodes are just better than others. No one would ever compare "Bad Eggs" to the "Becommings" or "Passion" - some things are just ludicrous.
But this episode was just a large disappointment.
It started off pretty good with Buffy living in a strange, hostile town, with "Lily's" return - even that Ricky guy was kind of Ok. Angel was showing up in dreams and it was nice to see Buffy still waking up with perfect makeup and hair. (Have I said how happy I am that her hair doesn't look like it did in the commercials yet? 0:-) These are the things we've come to expect. There was one line during the dream sequence that had me so happy though. I liked when she asked him how he'd found here and he said "If I were blind I would still see you." or something to that effect. That was a really touching line. 0:-)
Then cut back to Sunnydale. The Slayerettes are running around - trying pretty pathetically to kill vampyres - WHY are they having such a hard time? In the past they'd killed many vampyres and they've been helping Buffy for two seasons now - what went wrong this time?
Giles (with the spiffy new do) is running around trying to find his Slayer. Joyce hates him and blames the Watcher for Buffy's disappearance. I mean there was so much tension there - I really believe they could have done so much more with that. Giles and Joyce went through a lot of pain this summer but Giles had the Slayerettes to fall back on. From what I gather they spent their whole summer referencing 0:-) in the library and staking monsters in the graveyard while Giles tyraveled through the country on meal-less flights in search of his charge.
Joyce was alone - a bereaved single mother with a child who'd run away. She believed herself responsible for her disappearance and at the end of last season was left crying. I guess over the summer she went past grief to anger. She believed Giles was responsible for Buffy's disappearance. She accused Giles of stealing her daughter and leading her astray. The way she lashed out at him was wrong though. Giles was feeling as much bereavement as she was - perhaps even more but she ignored that and went for the jugular. *sigh*
Cut to Buffy. There's the usual evil guy plot going on in her new town but this time there's a dimensional portal. I'm thinking Yay!!! I've never seen one of those in a BtVS before!
That missionary monster guy comes in with some pretty good lines about the hells we create for ourselves and I'm pretty impressed - despite the whole Nazi-wannabe Halloween monster mask wearing thing he has going...He does the usual bad guy thing and explains that he and his minions are stealing kids and putting to labor - but for what?
THEY NEVER SAY!!! We see steam, gore, sweating kids but no end product!!! What are these aliens making them create?
So anyway Buffy goes in - kicks some butt, rescues the kids and splits - the usual but the fight scene was better this time around. I think they dedicated the whole summer away from us viewers to improving the fight scenes. This was one of the best ones so far. Sophia Crawford ROCKS!!!
But anyway being in hell and alone makes Buffy realise she's homesick and she decides to go home.
I waited three months to watch Buffy go home within sixty minutes. I mean yeah, its touching, sweet and inevitable but still!!! In the season premiere? *sigh* Just when you think BtVS has their act together and they're going to create Art they do something like this.
The only question left is how is Buffy going to get back into Sunnydale HIgh School since she was expelled? BUT THAT'S IT!!! EVERYTHING ELSE HAS BEEN ANSWERED!!! we all know what's gonna happen with Angel, we're waiting for Faith to show and well we know Spike & Dru won't be around for a couple of eps..........
But until then?
At least we'll get regular Buffy fixes again though. 0;-)
