The Whites and Yellows

Most butterflies in this family are medium sized, usually with white or yellow wings and sometimes with red patterns underneath. The adults are usually only found flying in strong sunlight and land quickly if it clouds over. In the tropics they can often be found in moist sandy or muddy places sucking up water and mineral salts with its proboscis. This is another family that migrates, and at times, enormous numbers can be seen moving over eastern Australia.

The white, yellow and red pigments are derived from uric acid which build up from the butterflies excretory system. The black colour found in the wings is melanin.
