Himachal
Pradesh or "Dev Bhumi The land of God" is essentially a mountain state-
it takes in the transition zone from the plain to the high Himalaya and
in the trans Himalayan regions of Lahaul and Spiti, actually crosses that
mighty barrier to the Tibetan Plateau. It is a delightful state for visitors,
particularly during the hot season when people flock to its hill stations
to escape the steering heat of the plains. High points for the visitor
include Shimla, the summer capital of British India and still one of India's
most important hill station. The kullu valley is very beautiful-a lush,
green valley with the sparkling Beas River running through it and snow
caped Himalayan peaks forming the background. From Manali the trip along
the spectacular mountain road to Leh is breathtaking, and it takes you
across the second highest vehicular pass in the world-only open for a few
brief months each year. Since 1992, the eastern valleys of Lahaul and Spiti
and Kinnaur have been open to foreigners holding inner permits (which can
be arranged through us- Tibet Tours and Travels Regd- while confirming
your trip.) These are now only necessary for the Tibetan border areas of
Spiti and Kinnaur. The people in these bleak high altitude regions practice
Tibetan Buddhism, it's a fascinating area to visit. Then Dharamsala, home
in exile for His Holiness the Dalia Lama, and most of the other hill stations,
lakes, walks and mountains.
