KHAJURAHO / SOUTH INDIA |
Close
behind the Taj and as popular as Varanasi, Jaipur and Delhi, the temples
of Khajuraho are one of India's major attractions. Once a great Chandela
capital, Khajuraho is now just a quiet village of about 7000 people. Inspite
of all the tourist attention it's still a very mellow place to spend a
few days. The temples are superb example of Indo-Aryan architecture, but
it's the decorations and carvings that has made Khajuraho famous. Around
the temples are bands of exceedingly fine artistic stonework. The sculptures
show many aspects of Indian life 1000 years ago - Gods and Goddess warriors
and musicians, real and mythological animals.
These temples are build during the Chandela period, a dynasty which survived for five centuries before falling to the Mughal onslaught. Khajuraho's temples almost all date from one century - long burst of creative genius from 950 to 1050 AD. Almost as intriguing as the sheer beauty and size of the temples is the question of why and how they were built here. TOURS: 1.
