Selmer Silver ClarinetsSelmer is known for making some of the finest professional clarinets, especially for the jazz player or soloist. In the late 1920s the silver Selmer was top-of-the-line, and far removed from the typical metal clarinets which were relegated to landfill years ago. Some say that the Selmer is the best metal clarinet, and can match up to any vintage clarinet. Whatever 'best' means, the metal Selmer is clearly something fabulous that any player should love to own. An engineer who found one of these said that he could fabricate one for me for $20,000 and was amazed at the quality of craftsmanship from days gone by. An exciting antique collectible that should go up in value over many years of play. This one is in great shape with no dents, new leather pad, a working tunable barrel, vintage Selmer mouthpiece, and original case.

In regard to other metal clarinets offered in the old Selmer line--particularily in the USA--There is the "George M. Bundy" , the F.Barbier, the Manhattan and the Raymond. When George Bundy was president of Selmer USA he aspired to put his name on the best clarinet in the world, so some of the early Bundy intstruments are quite good. With metal clarinets there are a few Bundy signature models that might be as apealing as a top-of-the-line Selmer to some players, but more than likely the metal Bundy will be the same as an F. Barbier, which is still much better than the average metal clarinet. The 'Raymond' , a Selmer USA offering which ironically was made by LeBlanc was the low end of the line, a very Spartan and lightweight instrument; yet of a quality that makes the Raymond one of my favorite metal clarinets. A few of the Raymonds, like the pro models in other brands, have gold inside the bell. These clarinet have a surprisingly great tone for something that was cheap in its day. [Click the links in the above paragraph for pictures of the George Bundy Signature, or the Raymond] The 'Manhattan' came later, and is of questionable quality--evidently having been produced by a variety of makers. ......................See 'photos' at taxijazz.friendpages.com for Selmer collection.
