"His early boyhood was lived on the farm and on reaching young manhood he came to
Spencer. For many years he and his brother-in-law, John V. Foster, were engaged in the
jewelry business here and maintained a large stock of jewelry, watches and kindred
wares.
"After disposing of this business, Mr. Barnes became interested in the floral business,
specializing in the growing of flowers. The buisness is known as the National Show
Gardens and Mr. Barnes enjoyed an international repution as a grower of dahlias. With
infinite patience he crossed and recrossed these plants, creating new and more beautiful
blossoms, some of which are very rare and command high prices. He was referred to as
the Dahlia King.
"Several years ago he bought the old Fletcher place adjoining Spencer on the
northeast. In the spacious grounds of that estate he was able to carry out his experiments
on larger scale in dahlia and lily growing. During the blooming season the grounds
surrounding the home presented a most fascinating appearance and people journeyed here
from long distances to adminre the wonderful picture presented.
"In spite of the wide prominence he enjoyed in the flower growing business, he never
tired of receiving local or foreign visitors, and took great pains to show them through the
grounds, talking of the many varieties he had created and telling of the plans he had in
mind for creating a veritable fairland of flwers. And at the blooming season he was wont
to remember his friends with great bouquets of blossoms. Many shut-ins have had their
lives made brighter by the thoughtful remembrance of E.T. Barnes in sending them these
beautiful masses of bloom.
"His big plans for beautification of the place, however, had to be largely abandoned,
due to his failing health. Nevertheless, he continued in his plans to what extent he cold,
often directing the work from his sick bed."
