VA (WV). Occupation Revolutionary War veteran; Indian spy and scout.
On 7 June 1777, George went to Fort Pitt to seek employment. He enlisted in the
company of Capt. Samuel Brady and served three years as an Indian spy and scout. Some
of the details of his scouting trips and encounters with the Indians are found in his pension
application.
Following his discharge at Fort Pitt in June of 1780, he remained in the Fort Pitt area for a
year during which time he frequently was engaged as a volunteer on spying tours. In June
of 1781, he returned to Hampshire Co. to visit relatives and in August 1781, while still
there, was drafted into Capt. Cunningham's Virginia Riflemen. He served as a private and
travelled with them to Yorktown where he witnessed the cature of Corwallis. His
detachment guarded the British prisoners on the trip to Winchester for imprisonment. He
was discharged and returned home in November 1781.
In 1816, George bought some land in Belmont Co., OH and moved his family there.
George was apparently an educated man and interested in education. In 1819, when most
of his children were grown, he and a group of neighbors in Belmont Co. leased a one acre
tract to build a school. Most of his sons and his daughter, Sarah, appear to have been
literate.
George was always very active in buying and selling land.
Later, he moved with his wife and Sarah (and possibly others) to Elizabethtown
(Moundsville), Ohio Co., VA (WV).
In 1830, he moved again to Mason Co., VA.
