"Amazon"
This sculpture is 42 inches high and can easily be lifted with one
hand. It is made of B-board styrofoam covered with a layer
of nylon stocking material and roof sealer paint, and painted to look
like bronze. Raw foam breaks easily, but when covered with
a tough skin material, in this case the nylon stockings and roof sealer
paint, it becomes very hard to break.

"Statue of
Bartolo" This is a statue of my neighbor, Bartolo,
emptying his coffee basket into a sack. I donated this
statue to the town of Las Marias. I much prefer the idea of
putting the little man on the pedestal for a change, insteas of
politicians and religious leaders. The statue was built directly
out of PVC pipe, foam, and cement.

"Belly
Dancer" (seen from three sides) Technically, this is a very
interesting piece. The base is hollow and may someday contain a
motor which will make the top figure dance. The figures are all
made out of RTV silicone rubber. The original was made in clay,
and plaster molds were made. The top figure, being sculpture in
the round was a special problem, since silicone in a mold has to
ventilate to harden. The figure was done in two pieces in open
faced molds and then joined. Bronze colored powdered pigments
give the clear silicone its color.

"Bust of
Tita" This is a foam and cement sculpture of a neighbor
lady who was like my Puertorrican mother in my first years here.
She was a fine lady, and matriarch of our barrio.
|
|
"Cyclops
Lady" This small sculpture was originally made
in clay. Copies were cast in white cement and painted. The
eye is a ping-pong ball.

"Evolution"
This is a hanging soft sculpture. It has some PVC material as an
armature. The main part of the body is mattress foam, and the
outer layer is colorized silicone rubber.

"Evolution of
the Horse" This is a welded steel
sculpture. It combines elements of the horse and the horseless
carriage.

|
"Figure
Study" Clay.

"Mini-Monument"
Not all of my technical experiments are successful. This one
using only foam and silicone rubber turned out to be fragile and
eventually was destroyed when someone drove into it with a car.
This is not to say that I would ever expect my sculptures to destroy
the car instead. Foam needs a tough, non-stretching skin to keep
it from breaking. Pure silicone rubber doesn't do the job.

"Parents and
Child" This is another cast cement
sculpture. I have never been a parent, but I have seen plenty of
parents who have seemed somewhat worn down by the constant demands of
parenting.

|
"Self-made
Man" This little welded steel sculpture shows a
little man with a welding torch finishing up his own foot.

"Umpah"
Umpah is a nude souzaphonist. The sculpture is made of foam and
cement. The bell of the souzaphone was an interesting
challenge. I shaped the air space inside it out of foam, covered
the foam with a layer of nylon-cement, and then dug the foam core out,
leaving the shell..

"Woman Combing
Her Hair" This is a welded steel sculpture. It is
hollow.
