'N Sync, the new "Boys of
Summer?" The vocal group demonstrated some of its offstage
skills this past weekend during a charity softball game held before
'N Sync's regularly-scheduled concert on Sunday at the Marcus
Amphitheater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 'N Sync drew an estimated 3,000
fans to the event, each of whom plunked down $16 and donated canned
goods to watch the group and some of its road crew down a local men's
team 12-4 at a Little League field in nearby Kenosha, Wisconsin,
according to the Associated Press. Those in attendance brought enough
canned food to fill three trailers, and 'N Sync plans to turn over
the food and money to several local charities and food banks in the
Milwaukee area. 'N Sync's next planned charity event will come later
this month, when it will sponsor a benefit basketball game in
Atlanta, Georgia prior to performing a two-night stand at the
Lakewood Amphitheater on August 26 and 27.
Britney Spears, 'N Sync, and 98
Degrees will help their fans say goodbye to summer with a special
concert event that's being taped next month in San Diego for
broadcast on the United Paramount Network as "L'Oreal's Summer
Music Mania '99." Organizers have yet to formally announce a
venue or a date for the taping, but other artists slated to perform
as part of the show include B*Witched, Christina Aguilera, Tyrese,
and Wild Orchid. MTV's own Bill Bellamy will host the two-hour
special, which will also include backstage interviews, a
behind-the-scenes look at the concert, and several surprise guest
appearances. "L'Oreal's Summer Music Mania '99" is
currently slated to air on UPN stations on August 31 at 8:00 p.m.
'N Sync and Gloria Estefan have
teamed up to record the title song for the film The Music of My
Heart. The film also marks Estefan's feature film debut. Formerly
titled 50 Violins, the picture stars Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett,
and Aidan Quinn. Though directed by Wes Craven, the film doesn't fall
into the horror genre, instead telling the real-life story of Roberta
Guaspari, a violin teacher in East Harlem, N.Y. Madonna was once
attached to star in the role now played by Streep. Grammy-winner
Diane Warren penned the song, which is described as "an
inspirational ballad with lyrics that capture a range of feelings and
emotions." David Foster served as the producer. "The Music
of My Heart" will be released as a single on Aug. 1, with the
soundtrack album due later in the month on Epic. The film is
scheduled to open Oct. 15
