Chapter Three

"Hey, what's up with the 100 watt smile, dude?", Justin asked as Chris arrived home, still smiling broadly.

"Looks like someone did a little more than catch a few waves with a certain best friend this morning", Lance smirked.

"For your information", Chris began, ignoring his friend's jests,"I just got myself a hot date for tonight".

"A date huh?", Lance repeated, "Alright, now how much are you paying her?"

"Yeah, yeah very funny. Y'all see how far your quick wit gets you tonite when you're at the club alone", Chris replied confidently.

"Hey!" JC protested.

"Oh, so Ali's coming tonight?", Joey asked.

JC smiled broadly. The only member of the group with a steady girlfriend, JC missed his girlfriend of 2 years immensely on their long tour periods. And the rest of the guys were often just as pleased to see Ali as he was, if only in order to get a break from JC's constant talk about her.

"So Chris, what's she like then?", Joey asked as Chris started up the stairs toward his room.

"You'll see", Chris replied mysteriously.

"Oh yeah, he's definetley paying her", Justin smirked.

Kari looked down at Chris' face as he slept. He lay with a slight smile on his lips, as she watched his chest rise and fall with his slow, sleepy breathing. 'How can I resist this opportunity?' she thought to herself, a wicked smile spreading across her full lips as she jumped playfully onto the bed beside her best friend. Chris woke suddenly and sat up to stare angrily at Kari sitting beside him, a mischievious smile on her face. Kari bit her lip to stop from laughing at Chris' angered expression. 'He's so cute when he's mad', she thought.

"Geez, Kari you frightened the hell out of me".

"Did I?" she replied innocently, as she watched Chris get up from the bed and walk toward the ensuite. He didn't even look at her as he left the room, knowing full well that if he did there'd be no way he could stay mad at her; she'd always had that effect on him. "I thought you were coming over later", he called from the bathroom as he splashed cold water onto his face. "It is later" she called back."JC says you've been asleep all afternoon. What's the matter gramps? Old age catching up with you?"

"Damn my back hurts", he said, standing in the doorway, stretching his back out. He looked expectantly at Kari, who was still sitting on his bed.

"Alright, come here", she sighed as she rolled her eyes. Chris smiled triumphantly and sat on the edge of his bed as Kari knelt behind him. Chris loved the back rubs Kari gave, a skill of hers that had often been put to use on 5 weary guys after they arrived home after months of touring.

"You owe me this anyway...ooh, a little to the left", Chris sighed. Chris began to relax as Kari continued to massage his back and shoulders. The shrill ring of the phone on Chris' bedside table broke the silence in the room. "Damnit" Chris mumbled as he leaned across to answer it. "Hello?" a slight tone of annoyance in his voice. "Oh..hey Mom" Chris brightened. Kari smiled as she watched Chris chat to his mom. "Yeah, Kari's fine. Yeah mom, I'll tell her you said hi" Chris rolled his eyes jokingly as he smiled across at Kari. "Ok mom...yeah, I love you too. Bye". Chris hung up the phone and turned back to Kari. "So? How is everyone?" Kari enquired. Chris' family was like Kari's second family and she was always interested to know how they were. "Well, Taylor is......" the shrill tone of the phone interrupted Chris as he leaned across again to answer it. "Hello?" Chris answered, the annoyed tone returning to his voice. "Tia! Hi, how are you ?" his angry expression replaced by the same grin he'd had earlier that day. Kari raised her eyebrows questioningly but Chris merely smiled mysteriously back. Kari got the hint that he was in for a long conversation as he settled back against the pillows, so she got up from the bed and slipped quietly out of the room.

"But we're supposed to have....yeah...I know...but.." Kari walked to the fridge, next to where JC was standing talking in a serious tone on the phone. As Kari poured herself an orange juice and walked to sit at the counter, JC continued his serious conversation with the caller on the other end of the line. "What am I gonna tell the rest of the guys? Yeah...yeah, I understand. Ok, see you Monday". He hung up the phone and sat dejectedly next to Kari, sighing sadly. "Everything alright?" Kari asked, concerned.

"That was Abby. She just gave me the great news that we fly out to Hawaii on Monday.

"Oh, Hawaii....how awful for you" Kari replied jokingly.

"We were supposed to have another two weeks break. The guys are not gonna be happy about this" JC sighed again.

"And I think I know of a certain girly who's not gonna take the news too well either", Kari added.

"Yeah, I'm gonna have to tell Ali tonite. So much for a great night out" JC said sadly.

"What are you talking about? It's gonna be a blast".

JC smiled at Kari's high spirits. "That's better"she smiled back. "I'll be back around 8" she said as she squeezed JC's arm gently, before turning to walk out the door.
