She was a firm believer in the doctrines professed by the religious society of Friends; a diligent attender of meetings, and reverent in her deportment. Diffident of her own religious attainments she was wont to speak of her unworthiness and imperfections, and yet she possessed a high appreciation of the true Christian character. She loved the faithful followers of Christ, and desired to be one with them. Her death occurred with scarcely a moment's warning, yet we remember that the Lord "saveth the upright in heart." They "shall dwell in His presence."

A Minister.
Although his sickness was short, and his death unexpected to his friends, yet it was not so himself, for he had often said within a few months, that he was impressed with a feeling that his stay here would be short. He was entirely given up to the will of his Heavenly Father; frequently remarking that "let it result as it may, all is peace and quiet." When his physicians informed him his time was likely to be short, his countenance lighted up with a smile, and he called his family and friends around him to take final leave of them, and was favored to impart much counsel. To the physicians in attendance he said, that he hoped they would use their influence to hasten the day when swords should be beaten into ploughshares, and spears into pruning-hooks, when nation should no more lift up sword against nation, nor learn war any more. He seemed to welcome death by the expression, "Oh, Death, where is thy sting! Oh, Grave, where is thy victory." He then offered thanks in the language of the Apostle, "Thanks be unto God which giveth us the victory through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."

An Elder.
In the death of this beloved Friend, not only is a deep bereavement felt in the family and social circle, but from the Church has been removed one who had long known the love and power of God.
Impressed with this love, and yielding to the convictions and guidance of the Holy Spirit, he grew in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and thus became established on the Everlasting Rock, and sure foundation.
Christian humility and Christian cheerfulness were marked features in his character. Of sound discriminating judgement and amiable disposition he had the esteem and confidence of those around him, and was often called on to act as peacemaker in the settlement of differences. He was always cautious in coming to conclusions on subjects of importance, and when his sentiments were matured he communicated them with great moderation.
He was much concerned for the welfare of the young, and those who were entering upon the duties and cares of life found in him a wise counsellor and sympathizing friend.
For the spiritual welfare of his children he was deeply solicitous, making them the subject of earnest prayer, that they might be banded together in love and grow in grace.
He was an example of faithfulness in the attendance of our meetings, and acceptably occupied various important stations in the church. His clear discernment and sound understanding rendered him useful in the administration of the Discipline, and his judicious counsel, and tender encouragement to those exercised in the ministry, will long be remembered with feelings of affection.
He was deeply interested in the welfare of his country, which, while regarding all men as brethren, he loved with the heart of an enlightened Christian patriot, desirous of serving it in the cause of peace and justice.
In the spring of 1861 he had a severe attack of illness, during which time he manifested quiet submission to the event, whatever that might be. From this he so far recovered that hopes were entertained of his complete restoration. The following spring he was again attacked, from which time his mind was impressed with the belief that his stay here would not be long, repeatedly saying, "I ask not for length of days, but for one of those Heavenly mansions prepared for the righteous," adding-"If I am admitted into the kingdom of rest and peace, it will be through the unmerited mercy of my dear Redeemer, not by any works of my own: it is all mercy, all through mer."
As the time for the Yearly Meeting approached he expressed a desire to mingle once more with his Friends, and though in very feeble health attended most of its sittings, much to his satisfaction.
After his return home he rapidly declined, at times suffering severe pain, which was borne with Christian patience. He remarked to a friend who called to see him, that he felt his hold on life to be very slight, that he had been favored with a happy life, and all he desired more was that he might be permitted to reach the place of rest, expressing his entire resignation to the will of his Heavenly Father, whether in life or death.
Towards the end his sufferings appeared to cease, and quietly and sweetly he closed his earthly pilgrimage, leaving the consoling evidence that the "Everlasting Arms" were underneath, and that his purified spirit has entered into that glorious city whose walls are salvation and whose gates are praise.

He often repeated the following lines, and it is believed they frequently emanated from a contrite heart:--
Before I close my eyes in sleep,

With Thy protecting care."
He desired to be kept from the company of bad boys, fearing they would teach him their wicked ways.
