Her sufferings were great, but she often remarked that they were only sent in mercy. She hoped that they would tend more fully to sanctify her heart, and fit her for future happiness in the mansions of her dear Saviour. It seemed her increasing desire as time advanced that her family and friends might be preserved from evil, live near the truth, and be prepared at the end of time to meet her in that world where partings are unknown.

Rebecca WEEKES

Date of Decease: 12mo. 26 1862
Alton, Mich.
Daughter of Refine and Margaret WEEKES.
She felt a lively interest in the benevolent reforms of the day, and though ill health prevented her form acting a prominent part in them, she was always ready to speak, both with her tongue and per, for the oppressed, the outcast, and the destitute. For more than thirty years she abstained almost wholly from the produce of slave labor, of which she felt that she could not be a partaker and be held guiltless of the sin of slavery.

During the greater part of her life she was an invalid and during the last few years she suffered much from severe nervous disease, which, acting upon an exceedingly sensitive temperament, greatly increased the peculiar trials of her life. But her trust in Jesus gave evidence that her treasure was laid up in Heaven. She was often heard in prayer, casting herself on the mercy of her Saviour, with firm confidence that when her probation was ended, He would give her a home in one of the "many mansions" prepared for those who love Him.

To a friend who watched with him he remarked, that he believed he could say he had always endeavored to deal justly with all, which afforded him great satisfaction. At one time he said, that in reviewing his past life he saw many shortcomings, still, as it was not through willfulness, he hoped, and believed, he should be forgiven, and his hope and trust were in the mercy of his dear Redeemer. Quietness was the clothing of his spirit during his sickness, accompanied by the assurance that the end would be peace.

She delighted in the daily reading of the Holy Scriptures, and was frequently engaged in prayer and praise, expressing a full assurance that in mercy there was a crown laid up for her, and seemed only to await the heavenly call.
