Also, two other computers for children to engage in interactive skills reinforcement activities will be needed. Interactive Quizzes, which could be used for assessments of skills, can be easily created on the following website: http://motted.hawaii.edu/~quizuser/quizzes. Simply log on to this website and create as many self-scoring quizzes as possible. Also, the website http://intranet.cps.k12.il.us/ contains many grade-level skills activities for students to complete. Next, the following website, http://www.homeworkcentral.com offers activities for every content area, and it is easily navigated. These are the kinds of Web Sites that will be available on the Classroom Home Page, and parents and students can add many more!
Last, students can create their own Home Pages for creative writing activities. They can create “All About Me”, “My Top 10”, “Best Books Review Page”, “Daily Journal Page”, “My Friends”, “My Pets”, “My Own Links”, and “My Hobby” pages. They can also be innovative when they create “Power Point” slide presentations about favorite aspects of Leo Lionni books. Our own Classroom Web Site will have links to all student Web Pages, as well as a link to the Leo Lionni Teaching Unit. Pages of Lionni based activities will be easily accessed by students who would like to practice their skills. Also, worksheets can be printed off and completed throughout the duration of the unit. Other related units will be present on the Home Page as well. Teacher-made Online Units are easy to make, and free if each computer has Windows 98, Netscape, AOL, a fast modem and adequate hard drive.
CD ROMs, such as Reading Blaster Age 9-12, and Storybook Weaver Deluxe help students to stay motivated. Reading Blaster is a reading game that students love to try to beat, while sharpening sight word and reading skills. Skills include sentence structure, parts of speech, grammar, analogies, definitions, synonyms and antonyms, finding the main idea, reading for detail, drawing conclusions, logical reasoning, making inferences, using context clues, sequencing, and ordering. Storybook Weaver integrates art and creative writing for developing writing and story-telling skills. The text-to-speech feature lets students hear their stories out loud.
Finally, the computer center can
help students learn to communicate through student web page guest books,
and e-mail. Similarly, parents can e-mail children at school, and children
can e-mail parents at work and at home. Any notes to the teacher can be
e-mailed as well. Likewise, parents and students can sign each other’s
guest books with positive comments and feedback. The classroom web site
can also help parents to keep in touch with the daily events of their children
by clicking onto the “Daily Events” link, which is typed in by students.
Daily homework assignments, as well as long term projects, are posted and
can be printed off at home. Also, links to popular book clubs and interactive
educational sites will be displayed on the Home Page for parents and students
to access at home. Last, with a scanner, student’s artwork with captions
can be saved and displayed online.
