A l’origine, le Pow-Wow avait une signification sociale. Les Indiens vivaient en petites bandes nomades pour économiser les ressources naturelles. L’été venu, les différentes tribus se retrouvaient lors d’un grand rassemblement : les chefs réglaient les affaires tribales et de nombreuses unions étaient contractées. La Danse du Soleil, les parrainages, l’attribution de noms indiens étaient autant de rituels célébrés à cette occasion.

Aujourd’hui encore et plus que jamais puisque c’est une façon de renouer avec ces traditions, des Pow-Wow se déroulent tous les week-ends, soit aux Etats-Unis, soit au Canada. Ils peuvent être à caractère tribal ou intertribal.

Il existe actuellement 3 sortes de Pow-Wow, soit :

Le Pow-Wow compétitif lors duquel chaque danseur est identifié par un numéro, le but étant de définir le plus beau costume et le meilleur danseur de chaque catégorie.

Les Pow-Wow spirituels sont effectués notamment lors de certains rituels de guérison ou lorsque qu’une tribu à une demande spéciale à faire aux esprits.

Le Pow-Wow socioculturel où tous les danseurs, à quelque catégorie qu’ils appartiennent, dansent pour le plaisir, favorisant ainsi les rencontres et le partage entre les différentes nations et tribus.

C’est cette voie que nous choisissons de suivre en organisant un Pow-Wow en Suisse.

What is a Pow Wow?

The Pow-Wow has social origins. The Indians led a nomadic existence, in small groups in order to manage their natural resources. In summer, the different tribes would gather in big assemblies :The chiefs settled tribal matters, and many unions were concluded. On those occasions, the Sun Dance or name-giving were performed.

Nowadays and more than ever before, this is the American Natives’way of celebrating their traditions again. Pow-Wows, both tribal and inter-tribal, are organized in the United States and in Canada.

There are three different kinds of Pow-Wows :

Competitive Pow-Wows, where in different categories, the best dancer and the most beautiful costume ate chosen.

Spiritual Pow-Wows, where certain healing rites and special calls to the spirits are performed.

Socio-cultural Pow-Wows, where for their pleasure only, dancers of all categories entertain the audience, in this way favoring meetings and sharing among different tribes and nations. – This kind of Pow-Wow will be organized in Switzerland. It takes place at Bellerive, in September, 18 to 20, 1999.

It's this last kind of event that we are aiming at with the organisation of a Pow-Wow in Switzerland
