What Do Christians Believe?

First of all, and most importantly, we Christians believe the Bible is divinely inspired (originating solely in the mind of God), infallible (never lying), and inerrant (without errors). We believe the entire two Testaments (Old and New) meet these criteria apart from all other writings (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:19-21).

We believe there is only one God (Deut. 6:4; Isa. 43:10; 1 Tim. 2:5; Jas. 2:19), but He is revealed in the Bible as three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. We often use the term “Trinity” to denote that God is “Three in One,” but not three Gods (Gen. 1:26; Matt. 28:19; John 14:26; 15:26; 1 Pet. 1:2).

We believe that God is all-powerful (Gen. 17:1; Matt. 19:26), all-knowing (Prov. 15:3; Isa. 55:8-9), a Spirit not limited by space (Pss. 139:7-10; John 4:24), eternal (Gen. 21:33; Pss. 90:2), and perfectly holy (Pss. 99:9; Isa. 6:3). He is also the Creator of all things seen and unseen (Gen. 1 & 2; Heb. 11:3), and sovereign ruler over all of His creation (Pss. 103:19; Dan. 4:17, 25, 32).

We believe Jesus Christ is God incarnate (Matt. 2:2; Mark 2:5-12; Luke 24:52; John 1:1, 14; 5:18; 10:30, 33; 20:28-29; Col. 2:9; Heb. 1:8; 3:3-4; Rev. 22:13); He was virgin-born (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:22-23); He never sinned (2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 4:15); He performed many miracles (Matt. 9:18-26; Mark 8:22-26; Luke 9:10-17; John 2:1-9); He was falsely accused and unjustly arrested (Matt. 22:15-21; Luke 23:1-2); He died on the cross to atone for our sins (John 19:30; Rom. 5:8-11; 6:23); His body rose from the dead on the third day (Matt. 28:5-6; Mark 16:6; Luke 24:6-7; John 20:13-14; 1 Cor. 15:3-5); He was taken up into Heaven without dying again (Mark 16:19; Luke 24:51; Heb. 4:14); He now sits at the Father’s right hand, interceding for us (Rom. 8:34; Heb. 1:3); and He will return to the earth someday (Matt. 26:64; John 21:22-23; Rev. 19:11-21; 22:7, 12).

We believe the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost) is a personal Being with senses (Acts 8:29; 10:19-20; 21:11; Eph. 4:30; 1 Tim. 4:1; Rev. 14:13; 22:17); He is God as the Father and the Son are God (Gen. 1:2; Matt. 12:31-32; Mark 3:29; Acts 5:3-4; 20:28); He is the indwelling Counselor of every Christian (John 14:15-17; Rom. 8:9; 1 John 3:24); He convicts us when we sin (John 14:23-26), and empowers us for God’s service (Acts 1:8; 1 Cor. 12:3-6).

We believe all human beings are natural-born sinners ever since the fall of Adam and Eve (Rom. 3:23; 5:12-14; 1 John 1:8). We believe a lost person can be saved from sin only by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Rom. 3:22-24; Eph. 2:8-9). Salvation from sin can never be merited by good works (Rom. 4:5; Phil. 3:9; Tit. 3:5).

We believe the dead will be raised (1 Cor. 15:12-13; 1 Thes. 4:14-17). We believe after all is said and done, the true believers will live forever in the new Heaven and new Earth with Christ, and unbelievers will be cast into the lake of fire with Satan (Matt. 25:31-46; Rev. 20:1-21:4).

That is a summary of what true Christians believe. If while reading it, you found something with which you certainly did not agree, then you might not be a Christian; might not! That is not to say that a person must believe and understand all of those doctrines to become a Christian, but a true understanding of essential Christian doctrines will develop in every true convert, because growth follows birth.
