What Is the Trinity, and Is it Biblical?

The Bible (God’s Word) undoubtedly affirms that there is only one God (Deut. 4:35; 6:4; 32:39; 2 Sam. 7:22; Isa. 43:10; 44:6; 45:21; Zech. 14:9; 1 Cor. 8:4; 1 Tim. 2:5; Jam. 2:19). Then why do Christians believe that God is a trinity (or tri-unity): the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?

Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, "Oneness" Pentecostals, and certain other religious groups adamantly deny the Trinity, yet they all claim to be Christians. They argue that the term "trinity" does not appear anywhere in the Bible. They are technically correct, but they cannot fairly argue against the theology of the trinity which is clearly taught in the Bible.

The Bible teaches that there is one Person called the Father, and He is God (Mal. 2:10; Matt. 5:16; Mark 14:36; Luke 11:2; Rom. 15:6; 1 Cor. 8:6; Eph. 3:14). There is also a second Person called the Son (Jesus Christ), and He is God (Matt. 1:22-23; Mark 2:6-10; Luke 24:52; John 1:1, 14; 8:24, 27, 58; 9:37-38; 10:30,33; 12:44-45; 14:9-11; 20:28-29; Col. 2:9; Heb. 1:8; Rev. 1:8; 22:13). There is yet a third Person called the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:29; 21:11; 1 Tim. 4:1; Rev. 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22; 14:13; 22:17), and He is God (Gen. 1:2; Matt. 12:31-32; Mark 3:29; Acts 5:3-4). These three Persons are all One and the same God (Matt. 28:19; John 14:26; 15:26; 1 Pet. 1:2).

Who created the universe? Was it the Father (John 14:2)? The Son (John 1:1-3; Col. 1:16-17)? The Holy Spirit (Gen. 1:2; Psa. 104:30)? Or God (Gen. 1:1; Heb. 11:3)?

Who raised Christ from the dead? Was it the Father (Acts 3:26; Rom. 6:4; Gal. 1:1; 1 Thes. 1:10)? The Son (John 2:19-21; 10:17-18)? The Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:11)? Or God (Acts 13:30; 17:31; 1 Cor. 6:14; 2 Cor. 4:14; Heb. 13:20)?

Who saved us? Was it the Father (1 Pet. 1:3)? The Son (John 4:14; 5:21)? The Holy Spirit (John 3:6; Tit. 3:5; 1 Pet. 1:2)? Or God (1 John 3:9)?

The Trinity is also suggested (albeit indirectly) in the Old Testament. Genesis 1:26 reads, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness’” (NIV, emphasis added). Genesis 11:7 reads, “[The Lord said] ‘Come, let us go down and confuse their language.'" Why did God use those plural pronouns?

Sincere monotheistic critics often argue the Trinity is illogical. The Trinity may be beyond logic but not against logic. Jews and Muslims (just as Christians) admit they cannot comprehend the omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, and eternality of God, but they all (just as Christians) accept those theological truths by faith. Likewise, monotheists should never reject the doctrine of the Trinity merely because they cannot figure it out logically.
