Amman, Feb 14, (Petra)-- Scores of citizens on Monday participated
in a march protesting honour crimes and demanding the abolition of
Article 340 of the Penal Code related to crimes of honour .
Article 340 exempts from punishment those who kill their
female relatives found committing adultery and reduces the penalty
for those who kill their female relatives found in an adulterous situation.
The march started from Al-Hussein Sports City and headed
towards the House of Parliament to protest the Parliament's refusal
to accept a proposed amendment to Article 340 that would have exacted
harsh penalties on men convicted of killing their female relatives
to defend family honour.
At the house of Parliament, the marchers were joined by
Their Royal Highnesses Princes Ali Bin Al-Hussein and Ghazi Bin Mohammad
and delegation representing the protestors met President of the Senate
Zeid Rifai and Speaker of the House of Deputies Abdel Hadi al-Majali
to discuss the issue .
The march included representatives of various human rights
groups , women associations , professional and labour unions ,sports
clubs , tribal jurisdiction and students groups.

AMMAN (Petra) — HRH Prince Ali, son of the late King Hussein and the
late Queen Alia, today celebrates his 24th birthday.
Born in 1975, Prince Ali received his elementary education, junior and
secondary education at the Islamic Scientific College, the American School
and the International Baccalaureate School in Amman.
He obtained his high school degree from the Salisbury School in the United
States in June 1993, joined the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy in the
United Kingdom in 1994, graduated with honours and joined the Jordanian
Army's Special Forces.
He has attended several military training courses, including diving and free
fall jumping.
In September 1995 Prince Ali was admitted to Princeton University and
later to Columbia University in the U.S. where he studied political science
and history.
Prince Ali is the honorary president of the Prince Ali Club for the Deaf and
Mute. He is also president of the Royal Jordanian Paratroopers Club and
the Al Jeel Al Jadeed Club.
As president of the Jordan Football Association, Prince Ali spearheaded a
team training effort by obtaining contributions to sponsor the national team's
training camps, following which the players clinched the gold medal at the
August 1999 Pan-Arab Games hosted in the Kingdom.
He holds the Jordanian Al Kawkab Medal of the First Order and Al
Hussein Medal of Distinction, and has been decorated by several foreign
countries.
The Prince headed Jordanian humanitarian missions to war-torn Kosovo and
to Turkey following a devastating earthquake in its northwestern region to
deliver relief and medical supplies to victims.
Prince Ali, who has served as Regent, was recently appointed Commander
of the Special Security Guards for His Majesty King Abdullah, the Supreme
Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces.
