April 14th Contest Results
Results from the Sanctioned DB Dragracing Car Audio Competition on April 14th:
Jason (Vice President) competed and was very successful in his run for a title in the "street 3-4" class. That put his 3-10" JLW3's up against anyone with 3-4 10's and 3-4 12's in no walls.
Last year, the only competitors that were even close or could beat him with 3-4 subs were all using walls, so the use of the "NO WALLS" this year makes it alot more fair for Jason and Venom to compete.
In the qualification round, Jason's system was able to get an astounding score of 157.7 dbs. That was enough to rank 1st in his class to lead into the playoffs.
If you remember seeing or reading about "Venom" aka "Head Turner" in last years comp, he was scoring 148dbs consistantly. For this years comps, Jason added a power cap, but has not got the dynamat in yet. The added power reserve and adjustment of frequencys, gain, as well as a different bass CD moved the scores from 148's to 156's. I cant wait to see the jump in scoring when that gets installed.
After that, it was off to the playoffs. Elite Audio switched up the normal format from the usual top eight competitors down to 4 and then took the top 2 scores in the playoffs to move to the finals rather than the usual bracket format. And Elite Audio was adjusting the testing frequency during and after virtually every competitor until about 10 people left in the qualification round, which left plenty of people upset they were bumped from playoffs when they might have the superior system but the testing equipment was constantly adjusted before the playoffs. And the last complant was that a guy was reading a box(no one else could see the db readings) and was telling the competitors the scores. Plenty of competitors felt some of the scores were not truthful.
Enough wining...in the playoffs, Jason scored a 156.2 db. That was easily enough to qualify for the finals were he was up against a compact car with 4-Audiobahn 10's. Jason just went, yet they wanted him to go again before he could recharge his battery, so Jason knew his score might drop do to that, but he complied anyway. Jason went down to a 156.0dbs. That meant he had to watch and see if the compact car that had been recharging for almost 10 minutes had the added power to take the title.
In the qualification round...the audiobahn speakers scored a 157.4 dbs, which was .3 db behind Jason which meant it should have been a close contest. But remember the mention earlier about how the testing frequencys were constantly being messed with? Well, it showed to be fully true when the compact car scored a 151. A full 6 DB drop is not normal. It meant the readings from before were way off!
So, after Jason scored 157.7 in the qualification round, a 156.2 in the playoffs, and a 156.0 in the finals...Venom was able to walk away with first place and having beat the second placing competitor by 5 DB's after only .4 in the qualification round.
Roy (President) also competed and did not come away with first but was happy to finally have a reading on his speakers. Roy was running a Rockford Fosgate Punch 500a2 bridged to a Cerwin Vega 15" sub, then to a 18" JL Audio W6. He came away with a reading of 154.7 dbs in the qualification round. That score was second out of all competitors up till then however after the meters were fiddled with...it placed me at the 8th place in my own division.
So it was kind of frustrating having the mind set that Camelion might have been good enough for the playoffs but was not given as fair a chance as others after me had.
The most stressful thing about the show was an hour before last minute registration, Camelion's wiring was completely messing up. First the wiring in the power cap came out, then the wiring in the amp speaker channel came out, then moving the speakers to the right position for the comp caused the wiring to pull out, then the fuse blew....to make a long story short, it took 45 minutes to an hour just to get the audio set up right(the power cap was just ripped out and thrown in the car and the power wire just ran directly to the amp). It looked ghetto as hell, but we needed a score on Camelion.
Surprises for the show??? A 2nd place finisher in the World Finals last year(Team Horizon Audio) was competing with 4-15" Treo Subs powered by 10-4,800 TREO amps. If you are good at math, you can tell that was 48,000 watts on 4 subs. To give you a comparison, Roy was running 500 watts and Jason was running 1,100 watts. The audio set up was in a S10 with a shell. It was able to attain consistant scores of 167.2 db's but in the finals they were able to get 167.4 db to get over the string of consisted 167.2 scores.
The 14th ranked DB Dragracing competitor in last years circuit, Chris Ramsy, was running 16-12" JBL subs and in the finals, after easily having won, deciding to blow all the subs to get a higher reading and got a 165.5 db reading. As soon as the door was open, you could smell the fried voice coils.
A Rockford Fosgate equiped Explorer was at the show. It had TV's in the head rest, a TV in the head unit, a tray under the bumper that showed four extra battery's when pulled out, the side windows being pulled up to show an aplifier on each side, the back hatch door displaying the crossovers, and just too many other features to list.
If anyone knows Ronny Feilds(cornerback for the University of Cincinatti), he and his Black Lexus was in attendace.
And in the qualification round...a mike stand fell in a car and actually put a hole in a speaker. I have never seen that and I'm glad I was not in that situation.
