July 2001 Great Sounds Car Audio Contest

Results from the May 2001 Kenwood Sponsored competition:

Great Sounds was supporting the stereo community with another competition at their establishment. This was the first time in our memory that Kenwood, rather than JL Audio hosted the show. It was a shock, yet a nice change from the dozen or so JL Audio shows that we have been too. Kenwood brought the famous light towers and the F-150 truck and trailer.
"Floss ‘N Gloss" was low in representation with only the president and a vice-president being able to compete in the contest. Since Jason got his new trucktruck(1998 Sonoma), this was the first time he was able to get a reading on the new stereo set up. It isn’t clear as of now how low the mikes may have been, however numerous competitors were stating that the mikes were 4-5 DB lower than the ones they regularly test with.
Even with the low scores, Jason was able to place third during qualification with a score of 140.6 DB. In the playoffs, Jay had trouble with the new set-up. The Eclipse cd player was forcing the system to cut off for some mysterious reason that is currently unknown. With that crazy problem, and un-practiced stereo set-up he dropped to 140.3 in the playoffs and lost to a competitor that scored 141 DB. That dropped Jason’s finish to 4th place. Fourth is the lowest that he placed in Venom, however starting off with fourth show’s plenty of promise for the future of his new vehicle. There are plenty of changes for the stereo system, so the first place trophy’s will hopefully be a regular for Jay in the near future.
Roy was the only other competitor, that was representing "Floss ‘N Gloss", at the show. The Camaro was back at it again. The last show resulted in Roy easily walking away with the 1st place trophy and hopes were again high for this show. The Marion Competition resulted in consistent scores of over 148 DB’s. The qualification round resulted in a score of 144.9 DB. That was frustrating, but finding out that no other competitor was close to my score (in my own division), Roy relaxed and decided to do the tinkering after the show. He increased to 145.4 DB after turning up the gain on one amplifier. That was enough to easily get the first place trophy and a picture taken by a Great Sounds representative and the picture is currently shown in the shop.
The future for Roy’s stereo will be switching the 500.2 Punch amp with a Kicker 500SS and then I will be running 1100 watts to the 18” and the 15". That should increase the DB numbers 1-2 after a couple of other small adjustments are made.
After the playoffs were over and all winners received their appropriate trophies, Kenwood had 10 minutes of Outlaw format. Jason jumped up his numbers from 140.6 up to 145.0 when placing the mike inside the port and playing with the windows down. Roy had the opposite effect. With the windows down and the mike being moved to the middle of the front seats, the numbers dropped to 141.2 db. At least that’s what the MC said, that’s an awful big drop off, so the number might be wrong, but then again, the open air space might have allowed the air to escape.
So, to sum it all up…even with only two representatives for the club, we came away with another first place trophy(how many do we have this year???) And we put the “Floss ‘N Gloss” name out for anyone who didn’t know that were active in the competitive circuit. We have done show’s now in Monroe and Cincinnati in Ohio. And in our home state of Indiana, we have traveled to shows at Lafayette, Marion, and Muncie.
Please keep checking back or contact Great Sounds to get an update on whether or not Kenwood will do a double point event in the same location some time during August.
