---------------------------------------

Exterior Jail on sidewalk and steps leading to street,

Time: Day 1 - Mid-Morning

Weather: Hot, very strong sun...everyone is miserable, tempers barely contained, sweating with no exertion

Situation: 2 horses are at rail, the first is Nathan's, the other has reins hooked to Nathan's horse for a prisoner. Chris is sitting outside the jail whittling or reading when Nathan comes out leading a loosely bound prisoner

Chris (To Nathan)

Nathan, what's the matter with you? I thought we had decided this already! You determined to be going out now? Man could roast in this heat. Why don't you wait ‘til tonight, or maybe hope for rain by tomorrow, or maybe in a day or two get one of us to ride along for company. Me, I'd rather chance lightening tomorrow than frying today. He's (points at prisoner) not going anywhere, and nobody's waiting to hang him, at least not yet.

Nathan

(Peevish mood, fidgety) Just time to be going. I'm ready to get out of here for awhile. I need some room. I need some time alone. Most of all, I just need to get loose from the rest of you for awhile. Nathan do this....Nathan do that ... There's got to be someplace, somewhere that's better than this. I've got a couple of extra canteens, and it's only a couple of days ride to Ridge City. You just think can't anybody do something without you...well, I'm a full grown man . . .I can take care of this myself..

Chris (out of patience, talking over his shoulder as he walks away)

Yeah, I just noticed...but it sounds like a plan to me. Just suit yourself, go on...head on out. (Under his breath) ..Matter of fact...why not go soak your head. (Back to Nathan) If it comes down to anything bad, don't say I didn't offer.

Nathan settles the prisoner and mounts his own horse. Rides out of town at a too-fast pace.

---------

Exterior: Outside of Saloon ..

Time: Day 1 - Shortly after noon....even hotter than before.

Situation: J.D. is sitting on the porch outside the saloon, hot and sweating, but still alert and ready for anything. Nobody is moving on the street except Chris, who is leading his saddled horse toward the saloon. In the distance a woman is moving on a sidewalk in the general direction of the saloon (obviously not a saloon girl). As the men talk, she comes close enough to make eye contact with J.D. She quickly becomes a total distraction for J.D., to the point he entirely misses what Chris is saying.

J.D.

You going someplace, Chris? It's too hot to move, much less ride out.

Chris

J.D., do you know where Vin or Buck is at?

J.D.

Buck went to spend a little time with that Mrs. Carmichael, at least I think that's where he's been going the last couple of days. Vin's out hunting'.... or at least that's what he said he was gonna do. I'm free...anything I can do? Need me to ride?

Chris

J.D., you can tell more business that's not your own than anybody I know....somebody's gonna hurt you for that one of these days....and it could be me if you run your mouth in the wrong direction. Don't need you to do anything except tell 'em all I'm going after Nathan. He got it in his head to ride out this morning for Ridge City, but I've got a bad feeling about that town. I keep hearing the same rumors about it. Maybe I'm just restless like he is, but I thought I'd go along, maybe watch his back.

J.D.

The mood he's been in for the last couple of days, you'd better not let him see you following or think you're babysitting him. You're liable to get a knife for your trouble...maybe that's the prospect that's got you with such a bad feeling. (Distracted)

Chris

(Grins) You just never know. (More serious) but if the rumors about that town are true, Nathan may be riding into a kind of trouble he's not ready to handle alone.

J.D.

Uh-huh (distraction building rapidly)

Chris

(Thinks J.D. disapproves of the plan) Look, J.D., I'm only going to back him up. If he gets along there, then okay, I don't have to interrupt him at all... I'll just turn around and come back. Who knows...if there's any action that sounds interesting, I might just go someplace else awhile...

J.D.

(Just nods...totally distracted).

Chris

...but, tell Vin and the others that they don't have to wait any 10 days. If I'm not back in 3 this time....tell Vin and Buck to come huntin'! (Smiling, said to be funny, but an undercurrent of uneasiness.) I'd rather not spend another month in a place like Jericho, and Ridge City sounds bad enough to have the same smell.

J.D. just walks away, trying to make conversation with the young woman. Chris smiles, shaking his head, gets on his horse, and leaves in the same direction Nathan left earlier.

--------------------------

Early, Day 3

Location: Ridge City, general store/merchantile

Weather: Still very hot

Situation: Nathan is sitting outside the general store, watching and listening to people around, enjoying himself....and making conversation with a pretty woman. (Note: Ridge City has a railroad....situated in town, so railroad sounds could occasionally be heard.)

Nathan

Names Nathan Jackson....I'm from Four Corners. May I ask your name?

Mandy

I'm Mandy...Thornton. Are you planning to be in town long Mr. ah - Jackson??

Nathan

Couple of days. I came in to bring in a prisoner from Four Corners, but thought I might stay a while...see something different...get away from the bunch I work with for a couple of days....that's been nothin' but trouble lately. I thought I'd maybe talk to the local doctor.

Mandy

Are you a lawman? You're not sick, are you!!

Nathan

No....no...neither. Though I do work for the town to help keep things quiet. I just try to help out when folks are hurtin' or feeling poorly...there's not a doctor there. Anytime I can get a real doc to talk with me, I've got a better chance of helping folks out. Thought this little trip might give me an opportunity to find out what I don't know.

Mandy (more impressed)

Well, Mr. Jackson...If you're planning to stay awhile, and I hope I'm not being too presumptious, if you and your wife would like, we'd be glad for you both to join us for the town social tonight. Everybody's coming...including Doctor Gunter and his wife, Gail. Give you a chance to meet most of the people here. It's just a dinner on the ground....maybe a little music on the side. You'd be more than welcome.

Nathan

Haven’t had that kind of treat in a long time. Been a long time since I've just socialized with lots of family folk. There's no Mrs. Jackson, though (she smiles shyly). Would that make a difference? If not, I'd love to come. Just tell me exactly what do I need to bring or do to fit in.

Mandy

(Pats his arm) Don't worry about that....I'll bring an extra pie or something....no problem. Just bring yourself, come and have a good time.

---------------

Day 3

Interior: Saloon in Four Corners

Time: Late afternoon

Weather still miserable

Situation: Buck, Vin, Ezra, Josiah, and J.D. around a table, close to the saloon window. Only lazy, small talk going on when Mary enters...agitated...

Mary

Has anybody seen Mr. Larabee today? There's a wire for him from the judge, and I can't seem to find him any place! He told me he wasn't going to ride out in this heat...at least he had no immediate reason to do so.

J.D.

Saw him outside here yesterday....(voice trails off as he looks out the window)

Buck

Come to think of it, I haven't seen Chris or Nathan today...J.D. you saw Chris day before yesterday, wasn't it..(J.D., shrugges) .I didn't see him yesterday either. Mary, he's probably headed up to his cabin....That brook up there is mighty sweet and cool, even on a day like this. Why, I can imagine him being in for a good, cool swim about now (glances at Mary, makes her blush).

Josiah and Vin (together)

Not a bad idea. (Josiah) Brings good comfort to a man's soul....maybe we'd best be joining him.

Buck

Is it anything in that wire that won't keep? No telling where Chris has decided to beat out this heat...and

Ezra

I'd rather avoid this heat myself. Like to avoid him if he hasn't had a chance to cool off yet.

J.D.

I think Chris said that Nathan left to take back the guy that Mrs. Sanders caught making water in the alley.

Buck

Man, what a ruckus she caused about that. How many days he get?

J.D.

Judge thought he should spend 30 days, but gave him a break and sent him closer to home.

Buck

Getting so a man can't take care of business around here without some female giving him grief. And if that poor soul’s married, I bet you he'd rather be spending those 30 days right here.

J.D.

(Rising to go to the bar)...Anyhow, said he might follow him to Ridge City to make sure everything was okay. Anyway, I wasn't paying much mind.... and I'd rather try to mother-hen Nathan in his mood than argue with Chris about what he was planning to do.

Vin

Thought we'd decided to wait for the heat to break. If he's gone off alone trying to watch Nathan's back, he'd better do it from a few miles back. That man's been the most ornery cuss I've seen in a long time. You'd think he was itching to do something really dangerous.

Buck

(Smile & laugh) Maybe Nathan's just developed an itch he can't scratch.

Ezra

Who? Nathan? Nathan???

Josiah (to Ezra)

And why not? I truly believe all of us sinners are created equal...especially in matters of love and lust.

Vin (to himself)

Come to think of it, it's been a long time since Chris' pulled one of his disappearing acts, too. Bet he's got some real serious planning going on under that black hat of his, too. (Laughs to himself and winks)

Buck

Remember that little princess in the Seminole village. Nathan got along real well with that little lovely, thought for sure we had lost him to her wiles. A man can surely get lonesome.

Mary

Is that all you men think about?!! It's not at all like Chris to not let you know where he's going.

Ezra

Are you totally sure you are referring to our notorious friend, Mr. Chris Larabee? The same individual who built a cabin without anyone suspecting, right under our noses. The same irritating man who threatens us all with serious bodily injury if we stick one single finger in his business?

Mary

Do any of you know how long he's planning to be gone. Has anybody checked to see if his horse is still in the stable? You are all so....so ....so lazy, and totally irresponsible. How can you just sit here like this? He's your friend! And Nathan too.

Ezra

Mary, do the words wander and lust have any connection with either of those two gentlemen. It seems we've had this conversation once before...at least about Chris.

Buck

Now Mary, don't get so upset. He is our friend, a great friend to us all...but he's his own man. You can't hog tie him, and we wouldn't even try. I know that. You know that. This is JUST EXACTLY like him. He probably just got an idea about a little fun for himself.

Ezra

It is perfectly obvious that that gentleman has not learned one single thing since his experience at Jericho.....

Mary

And neither have any of you!!!

------------

Still Day 3

Switch to early evening, on the street of Ridge City....very good party going on...Nathan dancing and talking with Mandy, enjoying the atmosphere.

Nathan

Well, Miss Thornton, you've given me just exactly what I've been looking for....a real fine time. Don't know when the last time was I had this much fun all to myself. Seems I’m always sharing the good and the bad with six other people..

Mandy

Call me Mandy, please Mr. Jackson. I'm so delighted you're enjoying our town, but, so far, I can't imagine you having trouble with anyone.

Nathan

Well, let's just say the fellas I work with have been on my last nerve and, truth be told, I've been on theirs for a while now, too....but that probably won't be a problem for long...it's just from this hot weather and too little to do. I guess at some point we've been too successful at making Four Corners a respectable town. I've had a real fine time, but I guess I'll be leaving tomorrow or early next day. Before I go, though, I need to ask would you mind if I came back sometime. (Looking deep into her eyes) This town and the really special people I've met in it really suit me just fine...and you will call me Nathan, won’t you now?

Mandy

Yes sir, if you like. You're a grown man, Mr. Nathan Jackson....You come back just anytime you'd like to. Those people you're so fond of will be right here when you do. By the way, there's Dr. Gunter....I mentioned your interest in medicine to him, and he's more than willing to spend time with you. Why don't we go over and talk with Bill and Gail, and you can make your plans for a meeting time.

Nathan and Mandy walk toward the Doctor and his wife.

----------------------------------------

Day 4, Location: Outside newspaper office

Time: Next day, hottest part of the morning

Weather: Still extremely hot

Situation: Buck, Vin, Josiah, J.D., Ezra - on horses outside the newspaper office....Mary on the sidewalk. Evidently conversation is in progress and tempers are very short...

Buck

(Exasperated)... All right, all right, maybe that IS true. It'd be all my fault. We're going just like you want us to. I think you're worrying for nothing, but you've got such a case of "what if's" it's spread to me..what if Chris went to cover Nathan's back, and what if he's headed to Ridge City...who's going to cover Chris' back? And you're right, last time we waited a might too long to head out after him. This time we're probably going out way too soon....you just never know with Chris...and Nathan doesn't want to see us at all.

J.D.

Chris was worried about that town. Said there was some kind of rumor about that place. But Chris hasn't been gone too long....said not to worry if he was gone a day or two....

Buck

Day or two? When in the sam hills did he tell you that? That's not what you told us before....it's been more than that and we're just heading out. Are you sure you heard him right? Getting to Ridge City takes more than one day, and getting back takes another. He's been gone more than three now. J.D., what exactly did he say?

Ezra

(Under his breath, sarcasm/disgust) Chasing rumors and unrepentant sinners who are grown men in the midst of one hellatious heat wave because his new mother-hens are worried. Oh, merciful heaven..

Mary

It's about time you all thought about what happened last time. How long did it take you to decide to ride out. He would have worried about any of you much quicker.

Vin

Yeah, right

Buck

Worried that he had missed a party.....

Mary

He's not indestructible, no matter how much he and you seem to think he is.

Ezra

For goodness sake...even grown men are going to let off a little steam. It's our very nature...and you, my dear, are causing a commotion for absolutely nothing.

Buck and Ezra

(Buck leans toward her from his horse) When we find 'em, and we will find them, both, probably safe and sound and playing hookey or more pleasing games...but no matter, when we've totally destroyed their rest and relaxation..

(Ezra)

…and have become total pariahs ourselves

Buck

…we'll send word. If Nathan's not half dead, he sure won't be pleased to see us, and you KNOW how much Chris Larabee hates to have somebody interfere with his business.

Buck (Leans down closer to her)

Mary Travis, if you so much as breath a word about this to Chris....you know, let him think for one durn minute that we were the ones all worried about him and we thought he needed a nurse-maid....I'll deny it all the way to my grave...which won't be far off for any of us, come to think about it.

Ezra (to Mary)

You he just might spare, you do tend to have a certain charm, and truly beautiful women are scarce in these parts; but if he finds out you started this mess...I'm not counting on it.

Group rides out of town in direction Chris left before.

---------------------------------------------

Later that day....late evening

Location: Hill overlooking a valley (May call it Whitley Pass)....green, but somewhat scorched by the sun. There should be one large tree at the top of the hill, with a small forest at the base of the slope on one wide, a valley stretches below them.

Ezra

Well...the only good thing is we left Mary and her badger's temper in Four Corners.

Buck

Why don't we just hold up here for a spell. She won't know. The horses are worn out....we're all worn out...

J.D.

With any luck, maybe Chris and Nathan will pass by while we're waiting, and we won't have to go to Ridge City at all.

Two of the others hit him with their hats.

Buck

I'm with you. Might as well rest until morning any way. I sure don't relish the idea of meeting up with Chris or Nathan if they're not in some serious trouble. If we meet up with 'em both, we might have to kill em 'fore we can help em. If Chris is living in the saloon, I don't want to meet him at all. Let's make camp.

-------------------------------

Day 5 - Early Morning

Situation: Group of 5 getting ready to ride, except Ezra is still in his bedroll. Vin is ready, horse ready to ride, standing a small distance away, looking at something in the valley below...takes out his telescope. In the distance, dark menacing clouds are forming, wind blows somewhat and builds through the scene. Buck, obviously ready to ride, throws a cup of water on Ezra.

Ezra (yells at Vin)

I do not understand, Mr. Tanner, why we have to ride out at this ungodly hour....Please be so kind as to leave me alone, get this ruffian away from me, and let me get some sleep. Josiah, keep your hands off that coffeepot. I will soon be in need of nourishment.

Buck

Ezra, get your dang sorry butt out of that bedroll. Might as well ride now...once we finish checking up on Chris and Nathan, we can maybe leave 'em where they're at and just head on home. Be able to sleep in a nice feather bed in just a couple days...and me, I'll be spending some blissful time with the lovely Mrs. Carmichael.

Ezra (Rising)

Buck, do you seriously intend to head back and arrive in Four Corners without having Chris Larabee riding along...and face Mary Travis empty handed. I suggest we find quarters elsewhere until she's in a far more amicable mood. And by the way, do you think Mr. Larabee has any idea how enamored she has become of him of late and just exactly how committed she is to maintaining his well being?

Buck

Now what does that mean?

Ezra shrugged, starting to expand on the idea, "It seems to me our friend has a serious problem with keeping the lovely widow at more than arms length…he’s obviously smitten …"

Vin (whistles for attention, pointing)

Hey, come over here....What do you think? Does that look like Chris' horse down yonder?

All mount up and ride forward, leaving Ezra to come last as he quickly prepares his horse. He is seen dressed in a black suit. His vest is bright red.

-------------------------------------

Time: Day 5, short time later.-

Location: In the valley, one tree and hill just left behind should be in the background.

Situation: All five ride up...Ezra last. Chris is lying on the ground, one foot hung in the stirrup, his hat still tied around his neck, but off of his head. Horse is covered in dried sweat and is very skittish when the riders approach. Takes two or three to keep the horse from dragging Chris further. Vin and Josiah are the first to dismount and inspects the situation, discovering that Chris has been badly hurt.....large amount of dried blood on his head, cuts and bruises everywhere, sunburned face. Man is unconscious.

Josiah (to Vin)

Seems like those rumors may be true. This Ridge City place must be worse than we thought....that horse is worn out or he'd have been running way before we got to him.

Buck (from horseback, dismounting as talks)

How is he? Is he alive? Can you tell anything about what happened?

Vin

He's breathing. Can't say as I can tell anything about what happened....seems like the horse dragged him quite a ways though, and he seems to have been here or someplace just as hot for quite a spell...didn't have his hat on..when he rode out, he must have had his hat. Buck, you ever know Chris to just up and fall off a horse?

Buck

Never did....never did. Known him a long time. He don't come off any horse...Not when he's sober and not when he's not. He got bucked off once (laughs softly at the memory), I remember, but it didn't really count cause some dang cowboy put burrs under the saddle blanket and that was one green mount. Made one of the big mistake of my life laughing at him when he was on the ground.

Vin

That's what I mean....something went on that got him in such bad shape he couldn't sit that horse. I think Josiah's right....if he did get in trouble this bad in Ridge City, Nathan may be in even worse.

Josiah

Well, this means we definitely need a few fervent prayers, a merciful God, and a plan.

Vin

Well, some of us better find Nathan...and some of us have got to get Chris to a town. Point is, without Nathan, I don't know much to do for him. Another question is...do we take him to Ridge City or go back to Four Corners.

Josiah

Since we don't know what's waiting for him in Ridge City, I suggest we take him back to Four Corners...either way, it's about the same distance.

Buck

But Nathan's in Ridge City....don't you think he'd be Chris' best bet.

J.D.

But we don't know Nathan's there....and we don't know if he's run into the same trouble that Chris has.

Ezra

Would you people please stop jabbering about this...you'd think we were just whiling away a lazy afternoon. We're wasting too much valuable time. First, somebody needs to go find Nathan...Okay, I'll go find Nathan.

J.D.

And I'll go too...(Ezra rolls his eyes)....just to watch your back.

Ezra

And ya'll get Chris back to our town. End of discussion...end of plan.

All others look at Ezra in surprise, or disbelief

Ezra

And why not? It is, I believe, a workable plan...one that leaves the three of you to get Chris home, you're certainly capable of that. J.D. and I can most assuredly extract Nathan from any unforeseen circumstances or at least cajole any valuable information on his whereabouts from the locals. Anyway, I kind of favor having Nathan along when quarters are tight, and I do believe we have all gotten rather used to him, myself included. (To J.D.) Come on young man. Let's leave them to discuss the rest of their most complicated plan.

Ezra and J.D. mount and begin to ride off, Ezra pulls up short and point to the sky...

Ezra

And gentlemen, by the look of that sky, I would strongly suggest that you boys plan and ride at the same time.

Ezra and J.D. continue to leave

Vin (watching after them, thumbs in belt, pushes back his hat)

Now, what exactly is wrong with that picture.

Josiah

Lord help Nathan if that's the rescue party. One with no sense of priorities, and one too young to have much sense at all.

Buck

Vin, maybe you'd better go along. They might would listen to you. J.D. thinks everything I say is just about worthless. He'll just get himself and everyone else shot twirling his pistols. Ezra will wind up in a poker game and forget Nathan entirely.

Josiah

I hate to agree, but Vin, you are the best hope any of them's got.

Vin (talking to himself as he reluctantly mounts his horse)

Well, shoot. Okay.. Alright, that's something I can consider as I ride. There's Josiah and Buck to take Chris back and me to watch out for Ezra's, J.D's., and Nathan's backs. Sounds like a real fair division of labor to me.

Josiah and Buck begin to tend to Chris...put his hat on his head..inspect for broken bones, etc.

Josiah

Buck, we can't put him on a horse for this long a time....we'd better find enough stuff to build a litter. I'll get the horses ready, you go cut some long poles, and then we'll figure out how to keep him on it and what to pad it with. At least we got a couple of blankets to help out.

Buck

You think we can make Four Corners before that storm hits?

Josiah looks up at the sky, shakes his head as in "I don't know, but doubtful" and both start to work...

-------------------------------------

Day 6

Location: Very upscale saloon in center of Ridge City, quite atmosphere, sign out front Ridge City Social Club

Time: Late afternoon or early evening.

Situation: Nathan stands at the bar, relaxed, with no worries. Name above the elaborate bar says Ridge City Social Club. He sees a man playing chess alone at a table not far away and walks over to ask for a game. The man is cordial and a conversation begins as they set up the board.

Chess Player

What brings you to Ridge City?

Nathan

Just delivering a prisoner. Decided to stay around a couple of days to get in a little rest..

Chess Player

You a lawman? Guess you would call chess relaxation?

Nathan

(Grins) Maybe for a little while. With the group I work with, it's hard to find a good game. Couple of em play, play real well, but they don't ever sit still long enough to start a game. From the looks of this board of yours, you're used to competition. Hope I'm not too rusty.

Chess Player

It's always nice to meet a new, worthy opponent....Let's see what training you've had.

The game begins

---------------------

Sometime later: Same scene, board has changed (should appear to be a relatively hard game, the Chess Player is winning, but not by much)...J.D. and Ezra enter.

J.D.

Look, Ezra, there he is . . .

Ezra

Well, I'll be.....just sitting there as pretty as you please. Playing a game of chess...now how very gallant...Not a care in the world.

Both cross toward Nathan's table

Ezra

And he's found himself a veritable heaven on earth. (Spies a poker game at a nearby table.) Wonder what the game is.

Ezra begins to wander toward the card game in the far corner...J.D. stops him and they head toward Nathan.

J.D.

Hey, Nathan, boy are we glad to find you!

Nathan (angry)

What are you both doing here. Can't a man get away from you for even a minute or two. Did you bring the whole gang, or is it just you two?

Ezra

Calm down, calm down. Chris heard rumors about something being wrong in this town and we're here to check it out. Vin's somewhere around, checking out to see if there's any other local, ah, establishments.

Nathan (to Ezra, standing and close in his face)

You're just here cause he thinks....you all think I can't deliver one slack jawed prisoner. I deserve a little rest....You know, I'm just about fed up with you all thinking you own me. I'll go where I want...I'll do what I want...and you or Chris Larabee aren't going to stop me. . .

Ezra turns away, feelings hurt

J.D.

That's not fair, Nathan....just calm down. Chris was coming to check out the rumor, not interrupt you, just to make sure you were okay, but we wound up coming instead. Vin's here too, somewhere...we're all three looking for you. Ezra even volunteered first.

Nathan (a little surprised at Ezra's offer)

What had Chris worried about Ridge City? What was just so important? Seems like a nice quiet place.

Ezra

Nobody seems to know. He just came looking for you, and got hurt in the bargain. Don't know if he even made it here, though. He may have just met up with some reprobate on the way in,

J.D.

Or he may have just gotten sick and fallen off his horse.. Anyway, we came across him about half way between home and here.

Nathan

Hurt? How bad? (Getting up) You can bet Chris didn't fall off any horse, that's a given facts.

J.D.

Buck says he did one time.

Vin (coming in)

I wouldn't go spreading that around, J.D. (To Nathan) You know, Chris....he's tough. He'll most likely be okay (doubt in his voice)

Nathan

Come to think of it, there was a rumor about a day ago that a fella on a black horse got in a fight up other side of town. Never did see anything or hear anything else about it though. Tell me now, how bad's he hurt?.

Chess Player

Gentlemen, if you're looking for answers about an altercation of that type, you might want to check the other establishment.

Vin

What other establishment...this is the only saloon we saw in town. I've walked ever inch of these streets....I didn't seen any more.

Chess Player

This, my friends, is the Ridge City Social Club. The "saloon"....a truly barbaric place...is what you're looking for. It doesn't have a real name....the women just refer to it as "that place", men prefer to call it the "Hell Hole." It's about a mile outside the other side of town. Nobody who goes there ever comes in here, or vice versa, but it's known for some very ferocious goings on..(Nathan begins to rise again)...but, wait, Mr. Jackson, surely we can finish our game before you are forced to depart?

Nathan

Got to go. Maybe later, or another day I ride over....Right now, I got to leave...you see, he's a friend of mine. (To the others) You boys all up for it.

Vin (Pushes his hat back)

Chris must have really been in trouble.

Ezra

And in a place called the "Hell Hole." Well....it certainly sounds like Chris' idea of a wonderful spot for rest and relaxation.

---------------------------

Day 6

Location: Chris' room

Time: Late evening

Weather: Rain storm outside, lightening flashes seem to disturb Chris

Situation: Chris in bed, feverish, muttering under his breath, reacts poorly to

lightening flashes, bandages are visible on his head, cuts and bruises on his chest. Mary by the bedside, wearing her black smock, disheveled, but applying moist cloths to Chris' head, trying to soothe him. Josiah enters quietly and alone.

Josiah

How's he...

Mary

Couldn't you find any place to hold up in this. Bouncing him around and getting him soaked to the skin for hours on end after he'd already been left in the sun...didn't help anything. His fever's much too high and it's taking so long to come down..I don't know anything else to do. We won't know anything until he wakes up. Otherwise, he's been pretty badly beaten...cuts and bruises, some broken ribs....bad enough, but they should heal. It's that blow to his head I'm worried about. It would serve Buck Wilmington and all of you right, if he doesn't come out of this!! (Sighs with fatigue.) I wish Nathan was here (chews her lip, worries with her hands in her smock)

Chris is caught in dreams....calls out first to Sarah and then Adam.

Josiah (soothingly)

Whoa, easy, Mary, Chris is ..well, he's practically indestructible. (Firmly) Now, as for you, I'm sending you home. You've got to take a break and check on Billy. I'll watch him while you get some food and rest. It took me a long time to get Buck to settle down, he's ready to do something half witted to avenge Chris. I'm tired of this whole situation, so don't you go giving me any arguments, not tonight.

Mary

I'm sorry. I guess you're right. I won't be long. I just can't help wondering what's happened to Nathan. We could sure use him right now. If he starts to wake up, you have someone find me....promise.

----------------------------------------

Later that night

Situation: Vin, J.D., Ezra, Nathan ride up to another saloon in an open area.

Transition: The men walk into another Saloon with a sign above the door that nobody can read. A noisy crowd is in the saloon.

All of the group are on guard, but nobody seems to notice them at present. Vin is talking with the barkeep.

Vin

Look, I asked you once, real nice like. All I want to know is did you see him come in here?

Barkeeper (Cautious)

And I said you'd better ask Harry. He'll know for sure if a fella like that has been here (laughs along with several others standing near the bar).

Vin (getting angry)

Then who's this Harry and where can I find him...and I mean right now, Mister.

A huge, mean-looking, African American man walks up from the crowd. He towers over all of the other men present.

Harry

Who's askin' my name? I'm Harry...Harry Thornton....so you'd better get it right.

J.D. & Nathan react, as do Vin and Ezra, and all move back simultaneously

Vin

All I need to know is did you see a man over 6 ft., wearing black, on a black horse, maybe within in the last few days. Name's Chris... Chris Larabee.

Harry (walks in between Ezra and Vin)

Believe I may have seen somebody like that. (Sizes up Ezra)

Say, Ed, he'll do just fine.

(Ezra) (realizes fully the size of the man and that the man if sizing him up)

Mother of God!.

Ezra fails to notice that Vin has stepped further back, and that Ezra is now in front of all the others. Ezra tries to back up another step, but not soon enough to keep from being grabbed by the collar of his coat and body slammed onto his back on the bar. The barkeeper tries desperately to control Harry, but then he quickly backs away too.

Nathan steps forward quickly, moving to protect Ezra, reaching for his knives. Vin and J.D. pull guns.

Nathan

Now, why you want to do that... you see here, you just let him go. Look, we're just looking for a friend who may have been here sometime in the last couple of days. Like we say, he's tall, light haired. Last time we saw him, he was wearing black, riding a black horse. His names Chris, Chris Larabee. Wasn't looking for trouble, was just looking for me.

Harry (sarcastic)

Well, someone dressed like that didn't get a real good welcome the other day, but I don't think he stayed around real long. All I can say is I didn't like him. Don't hardly know why. (Crowd laughs at this). Thought he might have been a lawman somewheres. Folks here thought he was kinda rude, kind of a fancy-pants hot head looking for trouble. Crowd doesn't like fancy pants. Anyway, he's gone.

Nathan (pulling a dazed Ezra off the bar and helping him get steady on his feet)

We thank you for your information. We'll just be leaving now. Vin, I got him....you got them?

Vin (keeps his gun leveled at the crowd)

Don't expect a one of 'em's ready to move just now.

All five exit keeping eyes on the crowd, mount, and ride out.

As Nathan mounts, Vin helps Ezra to his horse:

Vin

Ezra, you okay?

Ezra (dazed and wobbly)

Dear Lord.....what was that? Nathan, good Nathan, I am seriously in your debt.

Ride out together, but short distance out of town, stop to check on Ezra.

Ezra

Nathan...I mean it I thought I was most certainly done for. What was that?

Nathan

Ezra, what are friends for. You just take it easy. Don't ask me what that was, but if he's what happened to Chris, no wonder his head’s broke open.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Day 7

Location: Chris' room

Time: Early morning, next day

Situation: Chris is sleeping, still feverish, bandages on head, other bruises and cuts can be seen on his chest, face and arms. Mary is there, sitting in a chair by the bed, but asleep as she sits, her hair is down, she is dressed in a comfortable robe, with her hand still holding a wet cloth but her head and hand rest lightly on his chest. Chris stirs, sees the woman beside him, and returns to troubled sleep. At some point, Mary hears his ramblings, tries to soothe him, then she recognizes her own name)

Chris (mumbling, dreaming)

Sarah....come....Adam......where are you......don't leave me. ....don't go.... (A few moments later)...Buck, too damn hot Buck...not gonna make it this time. (Few moments later mood changes)...Mary? (small smile starts)....No, I'm not blind, Gerard (laughs, changes to deep sadness)...Not Mary too...say no...say no Mary...don't you leave me, too....(goes back to a deeper sleep).

Tears come to Mary's eyes.

-----small break....now daylight, but not strong. Chris stirs, sees Mary, is not feverish, and tries to move, is stopped by the sudden pain, groans ....Mary starts

Chris (Looking quizzically at Mary)

Is it morning? Don't I remember you being here last night?

Mary (sitting up, feels his brow)

Well, I certainly hope you remember me..That should be a good sign. You've been hurt...don't try to move around too much just yet. The fever seems to be mostly gone...I hope you're starting to feel a little better.

Chris (rougish grin, strange-looking eyes)

So do I...I'd hate to be feeling any worse. (Tries to laugh, but gasps instead). What happened to me?

Mary

Nobody seems to know yet. Now you just lie still...and don't worry about it....(Gives him water). Are you hungry...I'll be right here to take care of anything you need....

Chris (Misunderstanding the situation, he reaches up and pulls her close for a deep kiss...)

Hope that's thanks enough until your better paid and I'm able to thank you proper like..

Mary

(Suddenly furious, pushes against his chest, which reignites his pain, until she stands above him)

Chris Larabee!! How dare you....If you weren't so hurt already I'd teach you to play games like that.

Chris

Don't know...sounds like fun to me. (Sees her true anger...) Sorry, beg pardon, no insult intended. (Confused, but nice smile, Chris falls back to sleep)

Mary, highly embarrassed, turns to leave....

------------------------------

Time: Same moment

Buck and Josiah meet in the street...talking as they come to the room and enter. As they enter Mary pushes past them, leaving, with a crimson face and flustered.

Buck

Mary? Well, has she told you anything?

Josiah

She said his fever broke early on, but it's still coming and going. He still hasn't been awake, though, at least not for more than a few minutes at a time...(watching Mary go)...Wonder what's got her upset?

Josiah and Buck walk to the bed, and look down at Chris.

Josiah touches Chris' forehead (Chris opens one eye and sees someone above him), Buck then pushes down to shake Chris' shoulders.

Chris hurls himself, yelling, from the bed, straight at Buck and Josiah, and begins to circle while fighting furiously. Buck and Josiah, surprised by the attack, and trying to avoid hurting Chris, try to discover a way to contain the man. The struggle lasts a short time, but Buck and Josiah are taking most of Chris' blows full on. Chris is obviously getting worn out fast, but refuses to give up.

Mary returns, and sizes up the situation (wrongly)

Mary

(At Chris) What are you doing! (At Buck and Josiah) You get him back in bed!! How dare you let him get like this. Of all the stupid....

Buck (still trying to stop Chris)

He came at us. We're just trying to find a way to catch him and calm him down. Watch it...don't you get in his way. You're going to get yourself hurt, darling. That’s right, you just let ole Josiah and me corner him.

Mary

(Grabs Chris by the shoulders and makes him face her) You do what I say!!! You're not ready to be up. (Chris shakes her off....starts circling again).

Mary (to Josiah and Buck)

I don't believe either of you've got the sense .... Stop him. To let your friend fight with you at a time like this! Josiah, can't you stop him?

Josiah

Would you please lay off. If you'll be quiet we can maybe concentrate on getting him back down. Otherwise, he's going to get hurt again.

Chris (begins to stop fighting at Mary's touch and voice)

Mary? You're Mary??? Nice to make your acquaintance....(turns to others) Who are you? ....

Chris crumbles to the floor

------------------------------------------------

Location: Starts in Chris' room, move in stages to saloon interior

Weather: Not important, probably intermittent rain.

Time: Late afternoon, same day...

Situation: Buck and Josiah meet in the street just in front of the building with Chris' room. Both are still showing signs of the earlier fight, torn shirt or black eye...etc. This time, as they enter, they are more cautious and waiting for attack. Mary is not there.

Josiah

Mary says the fever's pretty much gone, and he's getting restless already, so there must not be too much damage. Doesn't seem to have anything really wrong with him...but he's just acting peculiar. Probably just that blow on the head, but who knows how long it's going to last.

Buck

Well, I don't know what she thinks about it, but if he's awake, maybe we need to just get him up and around town a bit to stir up his memory. We'll go along and make sure he doesn't get into trouble. We'll just take him for a nice little stroll to the saloon. Couldn't hurt, do you think?

Josiah

That sounds like a good remedy for a troubled soul...

Enter Chris' room. Chris is sitting on a chair, dressed in light-colored clothing, pulling on a pair of brown boots, without spurs.. He smiles at Buck and Josiah, seemingly with nothing wrong.

Chris

Come on in. Say, I'm real sorry about this morning. I guess I was dreaming when you walked in. Guess I thought you were the ones who did this to me...maybe coming back to finish it.

Buck

Well, no problem...we're just glad to see you back (slaps Chris on the back, which elicits a sharp intake of breath from Chris). You ready to get out of here and breathe some fresh air? If we're real quiet like, and we don't venture too far, we might just avoid another tangle with Mary.

All 3 walk out and continue toward the saloon; Josiah in the lead.

Chris

Sure, I think I'd like seeing that.. Where are we? Is she always that frisky? (To Josiah) By the way, my name's Chris....I seem to recollect his is Buck...but I don't think I caught yours.

Buck

Saloon's a good place to spend an afternoon....oh, we're in Four Corners, and yeah, she's a pretty frisky woman. Can be a real she cat if you cross her. Chris? Sure you know him, Chris...that's Josiah . . .you've known him for over three years now and you and me go way back.

Chris

Well, I feel like somehow I do know you, too, but just exactly how do I know you two?

Buck

Well, you see . . . we're sort of the protectors of this little town . . . I guess you can say we're associates or partners. You don't remember the judge?

Chris

All right ... that makes sense, I guess. Where did you say we were headed.

Buck & Josiah

Saloon.

Chris

Don't say as I remember a judge...was I in trouble with the law?

Buck and Josiah

You're always in trouble. No...not with the law.

Chris

There's the saloon....Do I drink?

At this point Buck and Josiah are becoming aware that Chris is truly not himself. As the 3 enter the bar, a rowdy approaches Chris

Callahan (in Chris' face)

Okay, Larabee...you good-for-nothing cowboy...you said next time I was in a mood, we'd have at it...and I'm in the mood now.

Buck and Josiah back up, trying to pull Chris with them

Chris (not backing down, but sincerely)

I'm sorry....do I know you? Did we have a fight coming? Let me buy you a drink to apologize. I'm sure it's not anything to fight about.

Buck and Josiah react, then gather Chris to the bar

Buck

Enez, little darlin', let us have a round would you. Give Chris a rye, and Josiah and I will have beer. Here, Chris, have a smoke...

Lights cigars, Chris coughs violently. Drinks arrive, all take a taste...Chris spits his out

Chris

Are you sure I drink this stuff? Maybe I ought to try what you're having. (Enez delivers the drink.)

Josiah

Buck, we'd better get him back to bed.. .But you better warn Mary how far this goes. Second thought, let her figure it out after we're long gone. You know who she's gonna blame.

Buck

This is just plain spooky, but I'm not telling Mary Travis anything unless we do it together. Haven't seen Chris this friendly and all smiling in at least 4-5 years. I hope Nathan gets back soon and knows something to do about him.

Josiah

You mean you'd rather have the other Chris back?

Buck

At least he's more interesting as himself than whoever he's being now, and with his reputation, he's liable to get himself killed....and us too.

Both gather Chris and exit

----------------------------

Location: Interior of saloon, at the bar

Weather: Not important

Time: Sometime later, same day

Situation: Buck and Josiah are sipping on a beer, talking quietly together. Nathan, Ezra, Vin and J.D. walk in rapidly. Ezra is moving noticeably slower than normal.

Nathan (rapid fire questions)

Chris all right? Where is he? Have you found out anything yet?

Buck

Well, he's alive....he's been awake....he's been out for a walk.

Josiah

And he has no idea who he is ...where he's been...that he's hurt...or that he's made Mary mad as hell.

Ezra (wanting to avoid Mary)

By the way, gentlemen, where exactly is the lady now...?

Chris enters, obviously still sore, still in light colored clothes...still friendly smile

Chris

Buck, Josiah, I finally managed to give her the slip. Thought I'd try another one of those beers.....

Notices others standing by

(Smiling, friendly) Hi, I'm Chris ...and you're...

Nathan (to Josiah)

You really mean he doesn't remember anything, or any of us, don't you...

Chris looks at Buck and Josiah

Chris

All of us???....just exactly how many of us is there?

Josiah

This is pretty much it ... seven in all. I thought we put you back in bed with orders to stay there (tries to take his arm)

Chris (ignores the suggestion)

And you say we're some type of law around here?

All shake their heads...some "no"., some "yes."

Chris

Do you have any idea what happened to me?

Nathan

After yesterday, we think we've got a pretty good idea.

Chris (suddenly serious)

Then what say we go find out who did it to me and give 'em a real hostile hello. (Strides out) Meet you in front in 'bout a half hour. By the way, has anyone seen my black pants and my boots?

Rest of group eye each other, then jump to follow...not knowing what to do

Vin

Maybe with all seven of us, we can all come out alive in Ridge City....but I've been through enough just now. Just don't feel like dying til tomorrow. Come on boys, let's see if we can't talk him into a meal, and a bath, then put him down for the night.

Ezra

You mean knock him down for the night, and see if we can keep him there. He's going to be one very disgruntled patient. Perhaps it would be best if we all stayed.

Vin

But I need some sleep.

-----------------------------------

Probably Day 8

Location: Street and Interior of Hell Hole.

Time: Mid-afternoon

Weather: Hot

Situation: Chris is dressed in black again. All 7 ride up, dismount and enter the saloon. Seemingly the same crowd is there, and the barkeep is surprised to see them back. Especially recognizes Chris.

Barkeeper

Hey, you back for another round? Gentlemen......what can I do for you....Say, you all sure enough coming back for another round? Even fancy pants? How you doing, cowboy?

Chris

Do you know me? My friends here tell me I need to get to know a man named Harry Thornton....you know where I can find him

Barkeep

(Admiringly) Back for another round, eh? Ain't ever seen anybody ask for Harry twice. Harry's a good fella...we all know him....but, mister, trust us, in all fairness, you don't want to get him real mad.

Harry

(Comes quickly into Chris' face) Larabee....is that you, you bag of dirt. I told you not to come back here!!!

Chris is grabbed and body slammed onto the bar. Lands dazed and shaking his head. Ezra winces, remembering the pain. The body slam serves to clear Chris’ mind.

Chris (Sitting up, hurting, and very angry)

Seems I do remember you ...attacked me from behind. What did you hit me with there at the end. I was just looking for Nathan here. (Notices Nathan.) Seems I remember I promised you that if I ever came back, you wouldn't want to see me.

All seven pounce on the giant and the crowd gathers in. As the fight progresses, someone pulls a gun and the 7 face off with the saloon crowd, Chris from the floor where Harry has thrown him again....Barkeep fires a shotgun into the air

Barkeep

That's enough....nobody's going to die here cause of a little ole contest. Harry Thornton...you stop now....this is one time I can't keep our promise to you....you got to let 'em go. It's been a mistake this time.

Harry (suddenly calm and almost gentle)

Ah, Ed...We made a deal. You said if I let the others alone, I could have one like him (points at Chris).

Nathan

Thornton? You last name is Thornton....any kin to a Mandy Thornton in town?

Harry (briefly turns all of his attention on Nathan)

Yeah...she's my kid sister....you got anything to say about it?

Nathan shakes his head...

Chris (getting up from where he has fallen in the fight)

One like me? Like me??? What's so special about me.

Barkeep

Yeah, like you. Thought you came to challenge Harry, here....lots of your kinda fellas do.

Chris (Sizing up Harry)

Maybe if they're totally blind, suicidal, or insane, and I'm not any of 'em, I hope. What's this deal you're talkin about and what do I have to do with it? I've never seen Harry before, have I?

Barkeep

Well, not before about a week ago most like. You see....Harry sort of has a temper. Always has had. Stays around these parts most of the time. He's a good guy, fighting is just a hobby for him...we all like him, but he was killin' us, so we all got together and made a deal with him. I promised him if he'd not bother people in town, we'd let him choose someone to fight every once in a while. Harry chose his favorite target...and you're it. Well, now the words got around that Harry's up to a challenge. Lots of guys come in to try their skill. There's a few who come no matter what to test him, but most of em are just like you. Shoot, it's real good for business...never know when the battle's going to start; keeps the place packed to see who'll try him next. Keeps this place thriving, even when it's this far out of town. Gives us a right fun atmosphere, a little excitement, so to speak. So from our view point, right boys, the more challengers the better. (Crowd roars approval.)

Chris

Well, the word's out okay, you idiot, but the word I got was that the town of Ridge City doesn't like black men....didn't know if it was true...just came to watch Nathan's back.

Barkeep

Mister, the word you've got's all wrong.....Harry doesn't hate black men. Hell, he's several black men rolled into one hisself....but the ones he just loves to fight are just like you...men dressed all in black. You gonna try him again?

Chris

He picked me because I'm wearing black?? That's why I got beat to a pulp by this son-of-a-bitch? Yeah, I'll try him again...

Buck

Chris....you ARE a fool....blind, suicidal AND insane....don't start anything new...

Ezra

Oh, hell.

The mass fight begins again with Chris leading the charge....

----------------------------------------

Day 9

Location: Back in home town saloon

Time: Late in the evening

Weather: Unimportant

Situation: A battered but proud group seated around a table, Chris among them. Buck is coming from the bar with two beers in hand.

Chris

Well, that wasn't too bad....what do you think...2, 3, 4 to one? A good fair fight.

Vin

Did you say 2 to 1. Shoot, Harry was 3 to 1 for all of us together.

Buck

Okay, Chris....I must admit, that was kinda like old times, but we may be getting' just a touch old for that kind of fun. Here, let me buy you a drink....have a cool one.

Chris

What's this...Buck....(sneers at the drink) you know I don't go that much for beer......Enez, let me have a tequila, make it a bottle, and bring me a couple of smokes.

Buck

But.......before....you said ... Forget it. Listen, next time you go off somewhere like that, the rest of us are about a mind to let you stew awhile, cowboy. (Chris hauls back for a punch, but let's it drop with a grin and a groan.)

Mary (walks in, stands hands on hips in front of Chris

Chris

Evenin', Mary. (Roguish grin)

Mary

Well, if it isn't Chris Larabee and his bunch of brave hearted fools. Mr. Larabee, the next time you decide to ride out of here on your own, chasing some rumor, and not leave anybody any word about where you're going and when you'll be back, I'll….,I don't know what I'll do...but don't you go looking to me to be your mother-hen or your nurse-maid or anything else for that matter. (She glares at him, then stomps out)

Vin

Whatever it was that you did or said to her, that's one set of amends you better make real fast. Do it for your sake and ours too.

Chris

Just exactly what did happen to me the last couple of days. I can't seem to remember a thing (others doubt this is true). Shoot! I've got a headache that won't stop...I'm so yellow, black and blue all over I could be a flag. Most of my clothes have disappeared, can't find my favorite shirts, my coat, or my black boots. That horse has tried to pitch me off twice.

Buck snickers about this, all wonder if he is the cause, but drops the grin when he sees the look on Chris' face)

"… and Josiah tells me I missed out on a fight with Callahan. Buck can't seem to remember that I’m more than a little partial to whiskey. Then, there’s Mary. just like that, won't believe a thing I say and on my case all the time over who knows what. All I did was go to back up Nathan. None of you are gonna listen, I guess, but I'm telling you again, this time I did leave word! (Rubs his ribs and jaw) Guess I'll have to send old Callahan to call on Harry for a month or two.

Together

What word?

Chris

I told J.D. Told him exactly what I was planning when I saw him at the saloon. He was supposed to tell you where I was going....I told him for you all to come hunting if Nathan and I weren't back in three days.

J.D. begins to move away from the table.

Buck (really hears what Chris is telling them)

Three?? J.D., I should a known you'd be the miserable cuss that put us in the middle of all this.....

Vin and Ezra jump after J.D., who ducks and heads for the door with both close after him.

Chris (watchin them go, smiling)

Well, Josiah, Nathan, I guess that'll just about do it...we're all getting pretty near back to normal....(At first gets quiet and reflectively, the suddenly acts just like Buck) Enez, little darlin', bring me a beer.

And gets a wet rag in the face from Enez.

Fade to black.
