The Truth

The truth is, while other fraternities took pride in being founded first, or having exclusive memberships, Phi Beta Sigma became the movers and shakers of the greek world. We put our famous phrase "Our Cause Speeds on it's Way" to use very quickly. In fact, you may find yourself surprised at the things we, Phi Beta Sigma, did first (only to find the other fraternities imitating us, as usual)

Did you know Phi Beta Sigma...

• were the original owners of the cane (later imitated by Kappa Alpha Psi)
• Originally had the dog (we dropped the tag shortly after Omega Psi Phi copied it from us)
• Was the first frat asked to merge with another fraternity (Kappa Alpha Psi's founder E.W. Diggs asked, and we later declined)
• Is the ONLY black frat with 3 presidents of other countries (Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah, and Nnamdi Azikiwe)
• Had a member named Huey Newton, who later founded the Black Panther Party
• First fraternity to step
• First black frat to go south of the Mason-Dixon line (Beta Chapter- Morgan College, Wiley College) That is the REAL reason they call us country boys
• First Black frat to go into the deep south (Zeta Chapter- Clark@Atlanta, GA)
• Summer 1914 moved into the largest negro frat house at Howard University
• ONLY frat with a bond w/ a sorority (Zet Phi Beta). The other
• co-founded the Pan Hellenic Council, the governing body of the fraternities/sororities
• First fraternity to establish a Grad Chapter
• First to establish itself in Africa
• First to found a credit union for its' members
• First to use a shield
• First to have a fraternal motto
• first to have a youth group (Sigma Beta Club)
