McCallum, Houston struggling
CARDINAL TALK STAFF
HOUSTON, Texas — Ray McCallum's savvy coaching skills that made him a champion at Ball State are getting him nowhere in Houston. The first year head coach is struggling to get his Cougars into shape. Houston who faces UAB Jan. 10 is a mere 5-10.
Houston's last win came on Dec. 27 against SE Missouri State 69-64, a losing streak of three games. The win broke up a five game losing streak, which puts the Cougars losers eight out of their last nine games.
Leading the charge in Houston is George Williams, who is averaging 13.8 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Dominic Smith chips in 12.3 ppg and Chad Hendrick is the other double digit scorer with 11.5 ppg.
The offense seems to be solid and the defense does a decent job. The Cougars are averaging 64.7 ppg while their opponents average 69.8. (Not a huge difference!).
Surely it's just a matter of McCallum's recruits coming in next year to form his new system. After all, he only has about seven different plays. But Coach RayMac seems different, as reported earlier this season from The Star Press. Maybe he has some tricks up his sleave that he didn't show in Muncie. Houston can only hope!
The Cougars and McCallum have to hurry if they plan on salvaging the season. |
