What I Learned
at Leadership Camp*
5 Qualities of a Good Leader:
Honesty:
Integrity: finish what you start
Dignity:
behave, be/have, be what you want to have
Ethical: know right from wrong, choose
right
Sensitivity: be sincere
5 Laws of Leadership: People are more important
than your title.
91% of leadership is based on attitude.
You cannot lead others
until you lead yourself.
You are worth what you give.
You can only give what you
have.
The Comfort Zone: Self-doubt is at the border of the comfort zone.
What
keeps us from leaving our comfort zone?
Fear of failure and...fear of success.
Once out of the comfort zone, 3 things are necessary: safety, challenge, encouragement.
Thus...that is how you need to reach...
The SHY ones: Insecurity is a form of
fear. How are people when they are afraid?
shy cynical/sarcastic silly conform
apathetic (they don't care) breakthrough I control my thoughts. I control my feelings.
My feelings control my thoughts. I control my feelings. Why choose to feel bad?
COMMUNICATION *is the key*
Four Types of Communication:
1. Verbal- the *weakest*
form, takes 10 times to sink in, only 10% effective
2. Visual- 24% effective
3.
Tactile- (physical) 80% effective
4. Intuitive- without the first three, some
things people just know
Levels of Maturity:
1. selfishness
2. independence
3.
cooperation
4. giving
*Most people can reach level 3; to be a leader, you must
reach level 4.
Motivation:
1. competition
2. cooperation
3. creation *Cooperation
is to agree to disagree.
*Leadership is more about working with people than it
is about commanding them.
To Get People to Follow You: Put emphasis on them, not
you.
Explain exactly what you want.
A. what you want them to do
B. how you want
them to do it
C. WHY they need to do it Communicate all the time.
When something
goes wrong, YOU take the BLAME.
*People are at their best when things are at their
worst.
Communication Attitude Responsibility Excellence Excellence:
-to excel
-set high standards
Responsibility:
-what needs to be done?
-when does it need
to be done?
-whether you want to do it or not!
-without anybody ASKING you to
do it
*What you put in, is what you will get out
Levels of Learning:
1. people
who don't care
2. people who learn a little bit, provided it is taught well
3.
people who will learn everything provided it is well-taught
4. people who will
learn EVERYTHING
5. people who draw conclusions
6. people who watch a good teacher
and copy
7. people who create their own material
*Do extra reading... Find great
teachers, write down WHY they are great.
Look Perfect Have a Plan:
*set high standards
*choose a style and stick to it!
*make sure everyone conforms
1. Evaluate
2. Teach
3. Correct
4. Run Through
5. Pay Attention
*Committ to a specific order to be
more effective.
*Change tone of voice when making corrections. PSP: -Positive,
Suggestion, Positive -Effective when making corrections Rehearsal Types: Start
with evaluation present new material always have something to write down have
a specific goal strive for perfection tackle worst part first (leap frog approach)
complete run-through *80% of rehearsal should have a specific goal. Specific Goal:
find something *very* specific determine a procedure determine a time limit (15
minute intervals works well) make the goal measureable (did we accomplish it?)
make the goal achievable Marching Basics to Own: IILSST: If It Looks STUPID, Stop
Them!!! *Don't let them get into the giggles. It wastes time. *Always clap a cadence.
*Maintain tempo. *Subdivide commands. Remember, it takes 4 complete steps to change
direction or stop. Do not say "detail" or "band" during moving commands... Ex:
"Detail, left hace!" or "Band about hace!" *Give them recovery time if they mess
up. *Use appropriate body language. *Never ever use informal language when they
are at attention! ***id like to thank Tim and George from the Vivace Productions
