Civil War Magazine Project

You are the new editor of a struggling magazine near the end of the American Civil War. The magazine’s investors want to see one well made issue to determine if they are going to continue to supply the necessary funds that will keep the magazine publishing. If you succeed in revitalizing the magazine, you, as editor-in-chief, will receive a large bonus!

To make your magazine a success you will need to include each of the following:

Color Magazine Cover (drawn and colored by you) with an original magazine title.

A table of contents, listing all of the stories in your magazine.

One commentary (written by you) on the effects of the war (1 page minimum).

3 news stories covering different events, battles, or meetings that occurred during the war. These will need to include each of the 5 W’s and be well edited and written. You can choose any part of the war to write about, but be sure to put the date on the event you are writing about (1 page each).

At least one hand-drawn picture or map for each story (at least 3 total).

One human interest story on the effects of the war on the people involved. This means you will need to create fictional characters, and tell your readers what it would have been like to be a participant. Your character does not have to be a soldier. Other choices can be a nurse, doctor, clergyman, or merchant. You may choose others, but ask Investor Roth if you are unsure whether a character will fit or not (1 page each).

Create one “Faces in the News” article, listing individuals who will play a role in America’s later history, and include what they were doing during the war (1 page total).

Create 5 or more creative advertisements of items that would have been available for purchase during the time of the war (1 page minimum).

Write one interview with one of the famous characters of the war, write it in interview style, with your question first and then the reply they may have made (1 page minimum).

Include a six to eight page essay based on a topic from the Civil War era. Your paper must include a thesis introduction, clearly stated reasons supporting your thesis, and a conclusion. You must use at least 4 primary sources in your research.

At the end of your magazine investors require a Bibliography (minimum of 10 sources).

This is a major project, so do not procrastinate! Your job and reputation are on the line, but the rewards are beyond your wildest dreams. You have plenty of time if you work consistently.
