The Institute conducts regular classes at its well-equipped premises in Jayanagar in Bangalore city.During the last three years alone, the Institute has conducted more than70 programmes for bank personnel at the level of Middle Management and Junior Management officers as well as Assistants. Each programme is normally of two weeks duration and has a strength of about 35 participants. Participants are drawn from several leading banks and institutions such as SBI Group, Andhra Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, Central Bank, Indian Bank, Punjab National Bank, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India and Vijaya Bank.
The Institute has a core faculty of 3 highly experienced professionals in banking and financial markets. The team is headed by Mr. G. Subramanian, B.Sc., B.L., CAIIB as Director. He was a former Assistant General Manager at State Bank of India with nearly 25 years of operational experience in credit and foreign exchange management, branch administration and training. He had spent several years as trainer at Zambia National Commercial Bank, Zambia as well as at SBI Staff College, Hyderabad and has authored books on General Banking ,Foreign Exchange and Lending to SSI sector. The Faculty receives guidance from Mr. K.Ramakrishnan as Honorary Adviser of the Institute, who retired from State Bank of India as the Deputy Managing Director after a rich experience of 35 years, including 5 years spent as CEO of SBI's US operations. The Institute gets the support of several leading bankers, capital market practitioners and consultants as visiting faculty.
The Institute has been conducting short duration Workshops and Seminars on topics of importance to bankers. The programmes on Letters of Credit, Treasury Management and Asset Liability Management, for example, have attracted large participation from foreign banks, private banks, public sector banks and corporates. We also offer programmes tailor-made for the requirement of personnel in specific banks. Such in-house programmes have been availed by ICICI Bank (4 programmes), Times Bank (5) and Dhanalakshmi Bank (2). We have also conducted banking programmes for software engineers in Infosys (2) and Ashok Leyland Information Technologies Ltd., besides Marketing and Sales Programmes for marketing professionals.
The Institute has brought out books on Banking,Credit Management and Foreign Exchange as well as General Knowledge for Bankers.The Banking Guide dealing with day-to-day banking issues is the most popular publication of the Institute, widely sought by bankers preparing to qualify for internal promotion tests. It has run into 9 editions so far with about 22000 copies sold. We also publish a quarterly Digest on Banking and Current Affairs which has about 3000 subscribers each.
The Institute is now gearing to expand its education to cover the emerging requirements of bankers entering the insurance sector. We foresee considerable training needs for bankers to get expertise in selling insurance products - both life and non-life-in the newly liberalised insurance business. We propose to provide intensive training to banks preparing to take up this new challenge of bancassurnce by organising programmes on insurance-related topics andmarketing skills required for selling insurance products through branch network. The trainingwill also be tailored to individual bank's needs in this sector.A team of experienced professionalsin the insurance industry is joining the Institute shortly to provide focussed attention to this important training requirement emerging in the Indian financial sector.We also propose to provide training to potential insurance agents as well as corporate brokerage houses aspiring to get license from the Insurance Regulatory Authority, to enable them to pass the prescribed examination by the Insurance Institute of India.Hence an associate Institute called JS Institute of Insurance has been setup.
