Set Track Record On 1st Night of Stock Car Racing
The first night of stock car racing this year at the Warsaw Speedway featured the setting of a new track record by Jim Hullinger, of Bunker Hill, last Saturday night. Hullinger, in his qualifying lap, completed the quarter-mile course in 18.03 seconds. The old record was 18.28, set in 1954 by Gale Smith, of Warsaw.
Forty-two cars qualified for the races Saturday. The feature 25-lap event was won by Archie Holle, of Warsaw, who nosed out Hullinger. Claude Everingham, of New Paris, was third. Winners of the four heat races were Max Lambert, of Columbia City, Bob Staley, of Warsaw, Bob Grindle, of Warsaw, and Hullinger.
Don Holloway, of Warsaw, won the consolation event, and the race between the six fastest time-trial qualifiers was won by Everingham. A second consolation race, over 10 laps, was won by Don Riley, of Huntington. The races will be held each Saturday night at the Warsaw Speedway, located on the county fairgrounds.

Bob Staley Wins Stock Car Feature
Bob Staley, of Warsaw, won the feature stock car race Wednesday night at the Warsaw Speedway, nosing out Archie Holle, also of Warsaw, in the last lap after both had raced side by side for a considerable portion of the race. Heat winners were Holle, Ellis Hartman and Jim Elliott, all of Warsaw, Bob Grindle, of Leesburg, and Jim Hullinger, of Bunker Hill.
Staley, in addition to winning the feature, also placed first in the race between the six fastest qualifiers. Ron Hile, of Columbia City, won the consolation event. A feature of the evening was a "jalopy race", with 18 cars in the starting field. The race, won by Bob Grindle, of Leesburg, included many crashes and spills.
There were no serious injuries during the racing activities, but P. Heckaman, of Bourbon, had his car roll over in one of the events. Jim Hullinger had an axle break in his car early in the evening and was not able to participate in the feature race. Thirty minutes of the racing action were broadcast over WRSW. The races will be held again on Saturday night of this week.
