Capacity Crowd Watches Races, Fireworks Here

A capacity crowd witnessed an exciting racing program and the gigantic fireworks display at the Warsaw Speedway last night in a climax to an otherwise frustrating weekend of rainouts. Saturday night's program was washed out after the demolition derby was run and the make up night was slated for Monday. Rains, however, came again Monday to shorten activities but not before five races were run constituting a completed program.
Last night, Jim Elliott of Warsaw, turned in the fastest qualifyying time of the evening with a 16.94 clocking around the oval. Warsaw's Art Smith copped honors in the modified feature event and another local, Luther Holloway, grabbed the checkered flag in the stock feature. Holloway also won a heat race.
For the two nights of racing the driver's purse totaled nearly $5,500 which eclipsed the record set during the Fourth of July weekend last year.

Feature Results: Modified Feature - Art Smith, 1st; Les Bills, 2nd; Paul Grimm, 3rd. Stock Feature - Luther Holloway, 1st; Jerry Baker, 2nd; William Powell, 3rd.

Big 18-Event Program Held At Speedway

A gigantic 18-event program kept a large contingent of racing fans occupied until nearly midnight in a thrilling evening of action at the Warsaw Speedway Saturday night. The doubled program was the result of rainouts both July 1 and 3 and the races were added to this week's card. There were a total of 83 cars qualified for the races. Excitement reached a peak when a car driven by Jim Barnett, of Columbia City, caught on fire but quick action by fire crews at the track prevented serious injury to the driver
Don Walker, of Kokomo, won the rescheduled modified feature and Art Smith, of Warsaw, came back to take the checkered flag in the regular feature. Pete Gross, of Warsaw, was the first to cross the finish line in the stock feature. Next Saturday night a 50-lap semi-late model stock mid-season championship race will be featured.

Art Smith Wins Third Feature To Gain Trophy

It was another big night at the Warsaw Speedway Saturday night as excitement was "King". Sixty-five cars qualified for the events and a big 25-lap semi-late model race was added to the program. Several wrecks caused restarts, but the most severe accident was Bobby Grindle driving through the fence at full speed. His accelerator apparently stuck sending him into the wall out of control. He was shaken, but not seriously injured.
Art Smith, of Warsaw, driving his white 67 won his third feature event in a row entitling him to the huge Buchanan trophy. It was superb driving on Art's part to pass a charging Jim Elliott who led for several laps.
3 CAR CRASH - In a semi-late model race, three cars collided and Carl Patrick's vehicle was caved in on the driver's side. He was not injured even though the car was almost demolished. The races, sponsored by Monteith Firestone, were broadcast by Milo Clase for 30 minutes over radio stations WRSW AM-FM.
