Don Murphy Wins Sprint Feature At Warsaw Speedway


    Don Murphy outdueled Harold Mouser to win the sprint feature at the Warsaw Speedway Saturday night. Mouser spun out on the 18th lap, allowing Don Walker to finish second and Tom Beezley third. The most spectabular incident of the evening came when Jim Elliott's car flipped into the air during the sprint dash, and landed on its top. Elliott sustained a bruised elbow, and that getting out of the car. Don Murphy won another duel, this time with Tom Beezley to win the sprint dash by a three foot margin. Louie Mann finished third.
    In the late model feature, Art Smith and Les Sroufe overtook Ray Chambers to finish one-two, while Jim Bucher challenged Sroufe but had to settle for third. Paul Bills placed fourth. Todd Grigsby, Bob Murphy, and Charlie Flaugh went to the pits with wheel or tire problems, while Chuck Saner had to pull into the infield minus the side panel from his car. Jene Simon broke his A frame during qualifications and was unable to race.
    During the hobby feature, John Fitzpatrick lost a tire in the backstretch, and it bounced high over the retaining wall and fence. Fortunately, no one was injured. Rocky Anders won the event, with Tom Leiter and Charlie Hyde close behind.
    Don Walker covered the 1/4 mile dirt track mark of 15.88, coming close to his track record mark of 15.59 set two years ago. Arden Leiter and Larry Montel were the fastest qualifiers in their divisions. Tom Beezley won the fast sprint heat with ease, while Bob Bernhard and Louie Mann finished second and third respectively.
    Les Sroufe captured the fast late model heat, with Paul Bills and John White following behind. During the fast hobby heat, George Sitts rolled his car in front of the grandstand, but was unhurt. Charlie Hyde was the winner, but was unable to take his victory lap because of an accident in the No. 3 turn.
