Barker Surprised To Win

by Kim Gregory
With the while flag signaling one lap to go, DeWayne Barker wheeled past Denny England in the first turn and came around to take the checkered flag in the 25-lap, winged sprint feature race at the Warsaw Speedway Saturday. It was Barker's seventh feature win this year in his Barker Auto Sales-sponsored sprinter and extends his point leadership over the rest of the field. In other features, Glenn Bradley won the limited late model and John Ormsby took the roadrunner.
In the sprint feature, Bimbo Atkins took the early lead, but was forced out with mechanical problems, turning the lead over to England. England held a commanding lead until with five laps to go, Barker began closing the margin. It was a surprise win for Barker, who did not realize he had won the race. He headed for the pits after finishing and later admitted that he was unaware Atkins had dropped out and thought that he was dueling with England for second place. Steve Kline wound up in third place and Dave Darland was fourth. The trophy dash was won by England with heat wins going to Rob Roberts and England. Barker had the fastest time with a 14.78 clocking.
The limited late model feature win by Bradley was his fourth of the season. Jim Taylor was leading with five laps remaining when Bradley moved into first place for good and Taylor had to settle for second. Third place went to Scott Dausman and Mike McMahan was fourth. The heat wins went to John Vigar and Randy Loucks, with the trophy dash going to Rick Stone. Randy Woodling broke his own track record with a time of 17.86. Robert Johnson won the roadrunner heat race.
Next week will be the season championships, the last regular show of the year. The Warsaw Invitational will be held Sept. 13 for winged sprint cars. The top prize is $1,000 for the feature.

Hewitt Wins Warsaw Invitational

by Kim Gregory

With a 32 car field competing for the Warsaw Invitational championship, Jack "Do-It" Hewitt came to win and did so as he won the 40 lap feature race Thursday night in his Nichols Bros. sprint car. The first 13 laps of the race were led by polesitter, Steve Kline, who had a growing lead until a yellow flag closed the field. On the restart, Fred Linder in second, closed on Kline and passed for the lead. Then just as quickly, Hewitt passed Kline and challenged Linder for the first spot. Midway through the race, Hewitt ducked underneath Linder and took the lead to the finish.
Second place went to Linder with DeWayne Barker coming clear up from the 12th starting position to capture the third spot. Kline finished fourth followed by Steve Butler and Tony Elliott to round out the top six. Fast time was set by Joe Gaerte with a time of 14.24. The trophy dash was won by Hewitt with John Scheidelman winning the first of four heat races. Other heat winners were Steve Beitler, from Sedro Woolley, WA., Jeff Donaldson, and Rodney Ritter Jr. winning the fast heat. The 12 lap consolation event was won by Tony Elliott with second going to Bimbo Atkins.
October 13 will be the track banquet at the legion in Columbia City, IN., for drivers and speedway personnel.
